"We were accustomed to seeing him in the morning, contemplating the Pacific Ocean . . . filling enormous notebooks with green ink. His poetry took root here, returning to the continual rebirth of the sea."-Marjorie Agosn

Few writers are as bound to place as Pablo Neruda was to the landscape and people of Isla Negra, his home from the late thirties until his death in 1973. These poems, gathered from a trilogy of books, celebrate Neruda's house, the people, the coastline, the sea and its creatures in images that are fundamental to an understanding of his mature work.

Amazon.com Review
Gabriel Garcia Marquez considered Pablo Neruda the greatest poet of the century. Besides his poetry, he left the world a legacy of love for humanity and for the power of language to change society. In this bilingual collection, photographs of Neruda's beloved house at Isla Negra are combined with his own words of explanation and his inimitable poetry.

The house, of which Neruda says, "I don't know when it was born into me," faces the Pacific Ocean, subject of many of the poet's meditations. In Neruda's prose poem, "The Sea," he sketches the vast timelessness of the Pacific: "It was so large, wild and blue that it didn't fit anywhere. That's why it was left in front of my window." Like time itself, the ocean is so unfathomable that anyone can disappear, "and the water doesn't know it."

The poem "The House" shows the relationship of house, stone, and man when he imagines stone as a previous home and says, "I touch this stone, and for me it hasn't died: / it's what I was, what I will be." This beautiful collection of poems is like a scattering of thoughts on the shore that Neruda has strung together into a song of life. --Susan Swartwout

From Library Journal
This collection combines three short works?House in the Sand, The Stones of Chile, and Seaquake?translated in 1986, 1990, and 1993, respectively. All three were inspired by the desolate Chilean coastline, whose marine cries and primal warnings spoke to Nobel laureate Neruda in a "hoarse and drenching language." The first part centers on the sea, which can dissolve a man like a bar of salt, and on the poet's seaside home, where he lived from 1939. On the high beams of the roof the poet carved the cherished names of dead friends, including Federico Garcia Lorca, because "their names will not slip down." The second part is reflective, inviting readers to discover for themselves the "secret of stone and of life." The poet even suggests that the comfortable silence of his stark retreat has kept him from doing more for the Communist movement. The final section is succinctly descriptive of life forms disturbed by the raging tide (seals, crabs, seaweed, starfish, and sea urchin), which, like love, is "wet, secret and hostile." Recommended wherever Neruda is popular.?Jack Shreve, Allegany Coll. of Maryland, Cumberland

The Postman (Il Postino): A Novel, by Antonio Skármeta

"A jewel of a story."―The New Yorker

The unforgettable inspiration for the Academy Award–winning Il Postino, this classic novel established Antonio Skrmeta’s reputation as “one of the most representative authors of the post-boom generation in contemporary Latin American letters” (Christian Science Monitor). Boisterously funny and passionate, The Postman tells of young love ignited by the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Set in the colorful, ebullient years preceding the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile, the book has been translated into nearly twenty-five languages around the world.

The Postman questions the role of "letters" in Latin America
By msarko@itis.com
On one level The Postman is the comical story of how Mario the postman seduces Beatriz with the help of Pablo Neruda. But it is also about the role "letters" play in the political process, and more specifically their role during the period of Salvador Allende's rise to the presidency in Chile and his subsequent fall when his government was overthrown by a brutal CIA-sponsored coup.
Throughout the novel Mario is a symbol of the rise of Allende's Popular Unity government, and the major events in the narrative are related to political events. For example, Mario first sees Beatriz the day that Neruda is asked to run for President of Chila. Neruda leaves the race when Allende decides to run again, and the day that Allende is elected Mario and Beatriz make love for the first time.
Mario's poetic apprenticeship with Neruda is also part of the political transformations of the time. Mario eventually becomes a different type of "man of letters." Not only does he become a capable poet, but when Neruda is in France as Chile' Ambassador, Mario studies French.
At the moment of the coup, Mario's role becomes more overtly political. He first courageously goes to the post office and retrieves Neruda's mail. He memorizes the mail and then sneaks into Neruda's house, which is surrounded by the military. Although Neruda wants Mario to recite poetry, Mario recites for Neruda offer of political asylum from countries all over the world.
The night that Neruda dies in a Santiago hospital, Mario is taken away. He is never seen again. The narrative we are told is written because Beatriz wanted Mario's story told. In a play based on the novel, Beatriz, her mother and her baby march on the stage in silent protest as the play ends. In the recent film of the same name, Beatriz is nothing more than a voyeuristic delight, and the class boundaries between Mario and Neruda are carefully maintained. In the Spanish text of the novel, when Mario has finished reciting the mail to Neruda, Neruda asks to go to the window. As they move to the window, the narrator says, "they moved as though they were one man." This line is unfortunately not in the English translation.
Skarmeta has told of accompanying the historical Neruda on political campaigns. On one occaision they visited an area poopulated by overworked and poverty-stricken workers who were familiar with the bulk of Neruda's poetry. More than anything this novel is about "letters" that can break barriers between workers and intellectuals and between culture and its historical and political exigencies.

Not exactly "Il Postino"
By A Customer
Though it must be granted that "Il Postino" was a fabulous film, I have to admit being very shocked at how much better the book was. Perhaps it was because of Neruda's role in the film versus the movie. In the movie, he doesn't truly become human until the end of the film. In the book, it's fairly obvious from the beginning. Also, there were several amazing love scenes in the book that were left out of the movie. I think that it actually hurt the characters not to have those love scenes, or, in some cases, some of the witty dialogue that occurred in the novel. As a read, this is VERY short, but delightful. It was full of information and images, managing to explain the civil war without letting it bog down the story. It was truly a coming of age story combined with love and politics that, honestly, can only be found in someone like Neruda's life. Firstly a love poet, it's wonderful to me that he will always be that first and a political component second, though he was very much so a Communist. Neruda has a way of causing the bones to melt with the flow of language. Amazing...and the mother in the book KNOWS exactly how dangerous metaphors are...and that, too, was amazing. I think this is definitely a read for those who want a love story that not too obvious, a political tale that's not too heavy, or a coming of age tale that is not too cloying.

A poetic look at Neruda's postman
By Rashed Chowdhury
My first reaction on opening this book was one of surprise: the book, unlike the movie, is completely Chilean, with no Italian connection whatsoever. As such, the book, in my view, fits better into its context than the movie did.
This is the story of one Mario, who becomes a postman once Isla Negra, an island off the coast of Chile, gets a literate resident, Pablo Neruda. Mario is an admirer of Neruda's works, and is determined to form a personal bond with the poet, with a veiw to getting a coveted autograph. When Mario falls in love with the local beauty Beatriz, however, his bond with Neruda becomes much more than that of an autograph-seeker: the poet recognises a fellow dreamer in Mario, and helps him in his quest of love.
The story is presented in a ceremonial language sometimes verging on the pompous, as in "He was bathed in the light of the incommensurable moon and felt certain, as he stroked her neck, that he knew about infinity." Skrmeta's choice of words only adds to the charm of the novella, though. As the author shows in his prologue to "The Postman", he does not take his own verbosity seriously, using it, rather, to add an ironic touch to an otherwise idyllic tale.

Identity and the Museum Visitor Experience, by John H Falk

Understanding the visitor experience provides essential insights into how museums can affect people’s lives. Personal drives, group identity, decision-making and meaning-making strategies, memory, and leisure preferences, all enter into the visitor experience, which extends far beyond the walls of the institution both in time and space. Drawing upon a career in studying museum visitors, renowned researcher John Falk attempts to create a predictive model of visitor experience, one that can help museum professionals better meet those visitors’ needs. He identifies five key types of visitors who attend museums and then defines the internal processes that drive them there over and over again. Through an understanding of how museums shape and reflect their personal and group identity, Falk is able to show not only how museums can increase their attendance and revenue, but also their meaningfulness to their constituents.

Review
John Falk’s determined focus on the visitor’s experience continues to transform our understanding of the relationship between museums and their audiences. Identity and the Museum Visitor Experience demonstrates that Falk remains the leading voice in the field of museum learning. For the first time he moves beyond theory and proposes a model that museums can use to explore how to serve their visitors in more meaningful ways. -Nannette V. Maciejunes, Columbus Museum of Art

John Falk's most exciting work reframes frustrating old questions in new ways that bring immediate clarity. In this important book, Falk shifts the old issue of visitor segmentation away from stable traits to ephemeral dispositions. His new formulation shows us visitors who actually seem to belong to the same species as ourselves, and whose differences relate to understandable differences in the ways that they perceive and use exhibitions. –Jay Rounds, E. Desmond Lee Professor of Museum Studies, University of Missouri St. Louis, and former editor of the Exhibitionist Journal

This book should be read by anyone serious about visitor experiences in museums. Falk reconceptualises the field from a wholistic perspective using the ‘lens’ of visitor identity and motivation. The model he proposes will shape and inform the nature, design and understanding of visitor experiences in free-choice learning environments. –Roy Ballantyne, University of Queensland, and editor of Visitor Studies Journal

A New Way of Looking at Visitors that Attend Museums
By Stephen A.
I was extremely impressed with Falk's book. In this book he talks about five museum visitor identities: Explorer, Facilitator, Experience Seeker, Professional/Hobbyist, and Recharger. Instead of thinking of general demographics of museum visitors, such as age, race, gender, etc., Falk recommends thinking of visitors in one of these five visitor identities. Doing so will help the museum better meet the needs of the community.

I currently work at a museum complex in Lehi, Utah called Thanksgiving Point, and I look forward to incorporating the ideas in Falk's book into our practices here. In doing so I hope to see not only an increase in revenue, but also an increase in the public's perceived value of our museum complex. I plan on conducting research to test many of the ideas presented in this book.

This book has caused me to rethink how I look at visitors that attend museums. It has shown me how I can more fully focus on their needs, instead of just thinking of the objectives of the museum. It is an excellent read for anyone in the museum field or anyone interested in free-choice learning in general.

Interesting insight into the museum visitor experience, though a bit too broad and theoretical. "Practical" part of the book (several last chapters) are particularly inspiring. Good examples of visitor interviews.

Review
"The latest novel in Preston & Child's Pendergast series picks up from the cliffhanger-ending of CRIMSON SHORE and doesn't let up. The authors keep readers guessing... The crisp writing and exemplary stories are still in abundance in this consistently exciting and never predictable series."―Jeff Ayers, Associated Press

"Rivetingly superb ... great fun ... thriller-writing of the highest order. A lavish, brilliantly conceived puzzle that pieces together neo-gothic plotting with splendidly rich tones."―Jon Land, Providence Journal

"Keep[s] the excitement meter pegged ... Action-adventure with a macabre, sometimes-fantastical flair."―Kirkus Reviews

"It's like Christmas for lovers of suspense when the words Preston & Child once again appear on a book cover. It's a truly great Christmas when the main character of that novel is Aloysius X.L. Pendergast. For those who have read these books voraciously, it's not a surprise to learn that this latest tale is one that will keep you riveted until the very end...Preston & Child continue to make these books the absolute best there is in the suspense realm."―Suspense Magazine on Crimson Shore

"New readers will be hooked...Die-hard fans will add this to their must-read lists."―Library Journal (Starred Review) of Crimson Shore - November 2015 LibraryReads Pick

"Fast-moving, sophisticated and bursting with surprises... If you're willing to surrender to Preston and Child's fiendish imaginations, you might devour the Pendergast books the way kids do Halloween candy...There's nothing else like them."―The Washington Post on Blue Labyrinth

"Preston & Child once again bring A.X.L. Pendergast to life and offer up a host of thrills, heart-pumping action, and an intricate plot that pits a vengeful killer against (still) the most interesting character in fiction."―Suspense Magazine on Blue Labyrinth

"These dynamic authors' best thriller to date."―White Fire was one of Library Journal's Top 10 Thrillers of 2013

"The best Pendergast book yet - a collision between past and present that will leave you breathless."―Lee Child on White Fire

"A mile-a-minute thriller with a deeply entertaining plot and marvelous characters, in a setting that will chill your blood, and not only because it's 10 degrees below zero and covered with snow. My copy is full of crumbs because I couldn't put it down long enough to eat."―Diana Gabaldon on White Fire

About the Author
The thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child "stand head and shoulders above their rivals" (Publishers Weekly). Preston and Child's Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number-one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series and their recent novels include Fever Dream, Cold Vengeance, Two Graves, and Gideon's Corpse. In addition to his novels, Preston writes about archaeology for the New Yorker and Smithsonian magazines. Lincoln Child is a former book editor who has published five novels of his own, including the huge bestseller Deep Storm.
Readers can sign up for The Pendergast File, a monthly "strangely entertaining note" from the authors, at their website, www.PrestonChild.com. The authors welcome visitors to their alarmingly active Facebook page, where they post regularly.

Nothing new
By Sjm
Ok, let me first say. I have read every book in this series and love the character.Such an original. But I am losing patience with this plot line of bringing people back from the dead. I long for the old days of Pendergast doing what he does best solve murders. Am I ready to give up the series no. But enough of the dysfunctional family drama.

Recycled dreck
By Henry E. Dorfman
It’s like intentionally selecting a five star restaurant to enjoy great Fettuccine Alfredo and they serve you macaroni and cheese. The authors raised the bar with the quality of the older works in the series. And, they apparently got lazy because, instead of relying upon the excellence of one book to sell the next, they have been resorting to tawdry marketing tactic of a principal character dying, disappearing, etc., only to leave the door open for resurrection ad nauseam. If you believed Pendergast died at the end of “Crimson Shore,” you should be coloring books, not reading them.

He isn’t the only one to rise from the dead for this farce as the authors dig up Diogenes to make mischief. Forget, if you will, that the last time we saw him, he was shoved into a volcano. He creates a seduction to marry Constance and fabricates a ludicrous ruse to throw Procter off the trail. Pendergast returns from the dead and, with the help of a compatriot from some black ops group of the past, takes pursuit.

That’s the nub of it without spoilers. If you don’t mind them, continue reading. Diogenes stages a false abduction of Constance that has Procter off and running after it, only to be marooned deep in Africa. There, he is stalked by hungry lions so he does the only logical thing. He goes to sleep.

In the meantime, Diogenes persuades Constance to accompany him to a private island in the Florida Keys where they can live happily ever after. The fact that she killed him (or, supposedly did) upon their previous encounter does not make him at all suspicious when she readily agrees to go. Part of his plan is to update the Arcanum that has preserved her youth. To do that, he requires fresh human body parts. To acquire there, he’s established an identity as a doctor which works well because, of course, no hospital or similar institution ever verifies credentials. Right.

The last we saw Pendergast, he was in a life and death struggle with a superhuman creature that took the combatants into the frigid waters of the Atlantic off New England. Hypothermia would claim a healthy specimen in a matter of minutes, much less an exhausted one. But, not so for him. He bobbed around long enough for a ship full of drug runners to fish him out. They hit upon the brilliant plan of contacting the FBI to demand a ransom. And, of course, the depleted Pendergast dispatched the boatload of armed criminals before that concluded. This reunited him with a compatriot from an old special ops unit with a common goal. Diogenes had killed a member of their clan and it was their sworn oath to avenge him in kind.

They track him down, at the expense of the deaths among those in their strike force, and manage to capture him. He is already devastated because Constance had decided to raise his hopes on the island with an ethereal night of sex and then dump him. Like, she couldn’t have done that back at the Pendergast mansion? Diogenes has killed many people, including their fellow agents, so what do they do? Kill him per their oath? Not a chance. Arrest him for his litany of crimes? Child, please. They simply let him go because he’s a “changed man.” Absolutely ludicrous.

In the end, Constance decides to go off and live with monks because Pendergast won’t agree to a relationship with her. Gee, do you think she and Diogenes might reappear in a later book? Oh yes, and Procter shows up on the doorstep encrusted in dried blood (from the lion attack) and caked with mud, as a result of his misadventure. You are to believe that, in his two-day (give or take) journey home, he didn’t encounter one water faucet.

The bottom line is that, instead of crafting fascinating new characters, the authors simply brought some back from the dead and forced them into an unimaginative plot that was simply a pedestrian extension of the beat-to-death sibling rivalry. It has all the earmarks of something that was done for a paycheck, not the art.

I have read and loved the whole Pendergast series
By Amazon Customer
Spoiler Alert ahead: I have read and loved the whole Pendergast series, with some of the books being great and some that I liked but didn't love. However, each of the previous books either solved a mystery, a murder, or dealt with their own great series (Diogenes). This book did none of the above. As far as the overall progress of the lives and times of Pendergast/Constance/Diogenes goes, this book can be summarized in one sentence: Constance gets mad at Pendergast and decides to go live with her son.

That's it... That's all. After the whole book is said and done, this is the biggest development that occurs in the lives of the three romantics. Oh, and a bunch of innocent people die with no justice and we're expected to just say "Oh, that silly Agent".

An excellent resource for A2K VBA.
By Ryan Small (rksmall@yahoo.com)
I just bought this book and I think it is an excellent book to learn VBA within AutoCad. I took a class in Autocad VBA back in the summer and got a copy of Using Autocad with Visual Basiic but found this books content a little lacking in terms of demonstrating the overall power of VBA. Autocad 2000: A VBA programmers reference is very good in exploring the Autocad object model as well as providing lots of sample coding. Also includes an extensive reference of Autocad VBA objects, methods and properties. An excellent book overall.

AutoCAD 2000 VBA : A programmers Reference
By Darren Lees
I have only recently delved into the further workings of AutoCAD 2000 and thought I'd try my hand at VBA Programming. So I bought this book. As an beginner to programming in general (though not to VB6) I thought the book would be a little above my experience.......WRONG!! This book is an excellent publication for beginner to intermediate users. If, as a VBA programmer, you can't find anything useful in this book then maybe you need to consider your career..........Absolutely outstanding

Is There No Place on Earth for Me?, by Susan Sheehan

This renowned journalist's classic Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation of schizophrenia—now reissued with a new postscript—follows a flamboyant and fiercely intelligent young woman as she struggles in the throes of mental illness.

“Sylvia Frumkin” was born in 1948 and began showing signs of schizophrenia in her teens. She spent the next seventeen years in and out of mental institutions. In 1978, reporter Susan Sheehan took an interest in her and, for more than two years, became immersed in her life: talking with her, listening to her monologues, sitting in on consultations with doctors—even, for a period, sleeping in the bed next to her in a psychiatric center. With Sheehan, we become witness to Sylvia’s plight: her psychotic episodes, the medical struggle to control her symptoms, and the overburdened hospitals that, more often than not, she was obliged to call home. The resulting book, first published in 1982, was hailed as an extraordinary achievement: harrowing, humanizing, moving, and bitingly funny. Now, some two decades later, Is There No Place on Earth for Me? continues to set the standard for accounts of mental illness.

Heartbreaking but often hilarious
By SOBnola
I've read and re-read Is There No Place on Earth for Me at least a dozen times since it's publication. I bought a new copy when I couldn't find the first (after Hurricane Katrina it was easy to forget what was lost and what was saved). I have 2 paperback copies and now the Kindle edition, which was updated by Sheehan and makes it worth the purchase.

Sylvia Frumkin is one of the most irritating, obnoxious, imperious, often (unintentionally) hysterically funny, and tragic people I've ever read about, including fictional characters. The book covers some of her childhood and troubled adolescence, when her first major psychotic break occurrs, and describes the endless cycle of hospitalizations which consumed the rest of her life. Through her journey we learn a great deal about the history of treatment of mental illness in the USA (especially New York state, where she lived and died) and witness her futile struggles to accomplish goals most adults take for granted, like having an apartment and a job.

Some reviewers stated they learned more than they wanted to know about mental health treatment and facilities and Sheehan is very thorough in that regard, but she provides a broader understanding without losing focus on one individual's fate. It's painfully clear Frumkin, and too many others, might have had a slightly easier time if the numerous psychiatrists who treated her had paid attention to her history, especially with medications. The background information shows how the landscape changed over the years, as more foreign, non-English speaking psychiatrists took jobs in state institutions because U.S. doctors could find better-paying jobs elsewhere. This is crucial to understanding some of the problems Frumkin and others deal with as they are misdiagnosed or simply unable to communicate adequately with someone who doesn't speak/understand English sufficiently and lacks cultural familiarity with a foreign country (i.e., the USA). One doctor diagnoses her as manic-depressive because he doesn't realize her wild references to Mary Poppins and other fictional and real people demonstrate typical schizophrenic symptoms.

What's more disturbing is the almost whimsical way her medications are prescribed and administered. Under-dosing occurs constantly, failing to note which drugs and doses are more beneficial, and inexplicably lowering doses or switching to another drug without compensating for the dosing requirements/adjustments between the two contribute to Sylvia's problems instead of helping them.

Sheehan's unflinching portrayal of the Frumkin family shows the agony of living with a deeply troubled child/sibling while demonstrating how much her parents contribute to her problems. Mrs. Frumkin is too self-involved to realize the antagonistic remarks she frequently makes to Sylvia only make the situation worse and Mr. Frumkin lives in a constant state of denial that blinds him to the fact his daughter will never be "well." Joyce, Sylvia's older sister, is the most sympathetic family member but she cannot curb her parents' behavior any more than she can control Sylvia, and she has her own demons to battle (almost entirely due to Mr. Frumkin's treatment of her from childhood as an overachiever, never quite meeting his expectations).

There is so much more I haven't covered I could write 20 pages and still not be done. It is often funny as hell due to Sylvia's absurd behavior (at times obviously meant to draw others' attention) and particularly non-stop monologues that juxtapose references to her real life, hallucinatory thoughts, and a cast of characters from Paul McCartney to Captain Kangaroo to the "best friend" she ever had, Camilla Costello, "Abbott and Costello's daughter."

Is There No Place on Earth for Me is exceptional and one of the most moving and enlightening books about schizophrenia, and mental illness treatment, I've ever read. That I frequently laugh out loud probably explains why I can re-read it again and again.

This book should be required reading for all psychiatry residents. I am a professor of psychiatry and read this on the recommendation of my own therapist. I just bought four copies to give to the residents I supervise.
This is the story of a patient with schizophrenia, who has spent her life in and out of a state hospital in New York. The author brings the patient, Sylvia, to vibrant life by actually living with her in the hospital. The Pulitzer was well deserved.

There is no place for the broken
By Mickey Robinson
Couldn't put it down. Brings to light the shameful way we treat mental illness and the patients who suffer with mental illness. It seems to be America's shame; hide the problem and hide the patient. Then add insult to injury and throw random medications at the problem. The patients are treated as sub-human by their primary caregivers who are usually the dis-enfranchised, poorly educated working class. The hierarchy the mental health wards establish makes everyone a victim with little or no access to resources they need to survive.
