I thought it was outdated

EBay has changed a lot in the past few years, and I did not feel like this book was current. Mr Ginsberg talks about how easy and fun using eBay is. EBay was, back when it had thousands of users. Now there are over 124 million users from countries all over the world. and it's very hard to get noticed among the sheer volume of sellers. Also, sellers are selling their items at ridiculous prices just to make sales. They are ruining the market in many items! I had a collector's book worth over $75.00, but sellers on eBay had driven the price down to $12.00 and less. That is when I decided I will not try to sell on eBay any more. It is still wonderful for buyers, but making a profit is very much harder than this book says it is.

Don't waste your money

This didn't tell me anymore than I already knew. All this did was tell you what is common sense. Example: get some things around the house that you don't use any more and clean it and sell it: Duh. Truly I can't imagine anyone getting anything out of this book. I have been selling on Ebay for 3 yrs now and all I wanted to know was how to sell multiples. This could not tell me. In fact I didn't see anything in this that had details on filling out those selling forms. Giving it 2 stars is being REALLY GENEROUS.

I bought this book when I was selling a lot on eBay. The book has lots of information on how to maximize profits and I learned great tips that I continue to use when selling on eBay. You will recoup the cost of book with your first few sales. Good tool for any eBay seller, regardless of experience.

Scholarship + Spiritual Depth = Great Commentary

I have over 100 commentaries on the Gospel of John and none of them even comes close to this volume. Critical and exegetical issues are treated fully and fairly. Footnotes are jam-packed with excerpts from numerous authors holding differing viewpoints. Evaluations of other positions are peacable yet thorough. Morris brings out the richness of John's message on every page. I recently preached on John 1:1 and this commentary was eminently useful for understanding the background and meaning of the text. Massive conservative scholarship, a lucid and penetrating style, profound insight and, above all, spirtual depth make this volume a masterpiece! Morris is not the only commentator on I consult, but he is always the first and usually the most rewarding.

Thorough and Readable Commentary

Leon Morris, principal emeritus of Ridley College (Melbourne, Australia) and author of over forty books, masterfully comments on St. John's Gospel.

The two aspects of this commentary I most appreciate are the conservative nature of the commentary and its high readability. In this commentary, the reader will find no historical-criticism. Rather, the author has faith in the inerrancy of Scripture and treats this portion of Scripture accordingly. Happily, when difficulties arise between the Synoptic Gospels and the Gospel according to John, he acknowledges these difficulties, lists several possible ways in which they can be reconciled, then ends with a statement reminding the reading not to be unreasonably dogmatic about such a difficult thing. Morris' conservatism and respect for the text is refreshing. Morris also writes in a very readable, fluid style. I found myself reading the nearly 800 pages of text much quicker than I expected to, mainly because the narrative structure was captivating and a joy to read. Morris frequently ties John's writings to the other Gospels, the Old Testament, Jewish/Roman history, and the post-Ascension church. He also has helped my understanding of John by pointing out his unique writing style (double meanings, playing loose with quotes, fondness for numbers, time, and geography, etc.)

There were aspects of this book that I did find frustrating. The most frustrating for me was Morris' anti-sacramentarian treatment of John 6 and the account of blood and water flowing from Jesus wound. Morris argues that John 6 should be read primarily as Jesus "teaching about spiritual realities...but...there may be a secondary reference to the sacrament(313)." However, he spends the following pages arguing against each and every perceived reference to the sacrament. I have strong beliefs that Jesus teaches primarily about the sacrament in these verses--that is my bias and I would like it do be shared by Morris--but the fact that he promises to address the sacramental teachings of Christ,then argues against his own stated view! I have a similar problem with Morris' treatment of blood and water flowing from Jesus' post-death wound as he barely addresses the belief that it is some reference to Communion and Baptism. A second issue I have with this book is the poor copy editing. The final pages of this book especially have frequent misspellings, misplaced commas, and extra letters inserted within common words ("nthe").

Overall, the weaknesses of this book do not even come close to overcoming the many, many positive aspects. I feel as if my insight into the writing style and theology of John has greatly increased because of Morris' book. Furthermore, I am anxious to continue my studies of both John and the Synoptics as a result of Morris' work. Highly recommended.

Clear - useful - readable

Leon Morris commentary on the Gospel of John is a must have for anyone building a library of Biblical commentaries. I have taught through this gospel on several occasions and have collected many great works on John. However, I always find myself comming back to this commentary by Leon Morris. It is not the only commentary to have of this great book but it is one that will contribute to your insight and understanding of John's message and meaning. Other key Bible commentaires on John are the classic by Godet, Beasley-Murray in the Word Bible Commentary and Ridderbos' theological commentary on the gospel of John. If you are just beginning to build your library, start with Morris. He covers all the major issues, doesn't hide from difficult questions and fairly present alternative positions. As a supplement to this work pick up Leon Morris' "Reflictions on the Gospel of John". More devotional in nature, it was originally written to compliment his NIC commenatry on John. However, last I checked this work is out of print but it can still be found via Amazon's out of print service. Morris' commentary on John and the Reflections offer the reader a great one-two punch. Either work can stand alone. These works make great gifts for the Bible student or your pastor if he doesn't already have them. You won't be disappointed!! Enjoy!

Worst Textbook Ever

The writting is repetitive, for example a bullited list will include the same item multiple times. Also, the writting is unorganized. Under a heading it will write about topics that should belong in a different heading. It is just bad. If you have to get it for a class be perpared for horrible writting and illogical organization

Excellent Climax to a great trilogy!!!

There are no disillusions in this last book of the series. It is exciting from start to finish as the characters grow in strength and are also beset by complications that stretch loyalties as the truth unfolds. We feel for these young people and their moral dilemma, and for Gabe who has to watch knowing what can happen. There are no spoilers here, there is no need to know more about the action than that the book has a very satisfying ending and that this is definately an author to watch and follow. An excellent finish to what has been a excellent series.

Gemma and Harrison enter their final school year with the ever increasing possibility that Gemma's parents will discover that Harrison does not only still exist but is also still having a very serious relationship with Gemma. Gemma and Harrison must also find out why Harrison's mother has suddenly turned on Gemma and when they do, Gemma must find a way to turn the situation around. When the exchange student, Simeon, arrives to lodge with Gemma and her family, things are bound to get extremely difficult for her and Harrison.

I was touched by the gentleness and purity of the romantic relationship between Harrison and Gemma, but, can such a lovely relationship outlast the antagonism of Gemma's so-called parents? When multiple lives seem poised on the edge of ruin and an innocent dies, will Gemma be able to make the ultimate sacrifice?

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series, I simply could not put this one down. Apart from the nonstop suspense, this book took me on an emotional roller coaster ride. I went from shouting encouragement and sitting on the edge of my chair with anticipation, to grabbing handfuls of Kleenex. Romance, suspense and truly tear-jerking moments; this book has it all. The brilliantly portrayed characters and the regular dates, given to keep the reader on track, brings a unique realism to the story; something which is very handy in a time travel novel. With never a dull moment in the story, the author kept me guessing right up to the end.

Once again I want to advise readers to get hold of "Golden Blood" and "Black Blood" - the first two books in this trilogy - before reading "Pure Blood". As this is the last book in the Time Spirit Trilogy, I was sad to say good bye to all these characters. "Pure Blood" is more than deserving of 5 stars and I sincerely hope that Melissa Pearl will soon have some more wonderful books for us book-hungry readers to look forward to. (Ellen Fritz)

The final installment in theTime Spirit series does not disappoint

In the first book, Gemma and Harrison fell in love, which greatly angered Gemma's parents. In the second bok, Gemma furthers her abilities as a time spirit, with help from Gabe, her real father. Now, after thwarting her parents' plans to write Harrison out of existance, Gemma must keep her love for Harrison a secret, and maybe save the world along the way.

While the first two books in the series had enough action to keep me interested, this one was a non-stop thrill ride. The suspense builds up quite nicely, which led me to read the entire book in one siting.

All in all, this is the best book in the series. Keep in mind, however; even though you may have predicted how the series ends, the way it is written will leave you satisfied.

Love the series, hate the quality of the books they gave me

i love the mortal instrument series and I love the infernal devices series too. But I have complaints with the quality of the book. The first book of the series I received had two ripped parts of the pages off it. Ripped and the other parts scraped. Very inconvenient for someone like me who treasures the presentations of her books. I understand they will take it back and give me a new one if I ask them too but it's just a hassle, something that could have been prevented in the first place.

Despite the occasional burst of purple verse, she succeeds admirably in bringing a difficult and treacherous conceit to fruition, liberally indulging in irreverent asides, vivid vernacular speech and clever puns. The generally high quality of the poetry overshadows the failure of the book to develop into a genuine, full-fledged novel. This is a vividly imagined albeit distinctly modern look at a woman's role in Roman times by a talented writer with a fertile mind and a playful spirit.

This quasi-historical novel, written in free verse, offers an irreverent, fun, and amusingly anachronistic portrait of Roman London circa C.E. 210. It is Bridget Jones's Diary meets Austin Powers meets The Fall of the Roman Empire. In swinging "Londinium," the chic Romans often don Armani togas and Gucci duds for their bacchanalian soir‚es. At the age of 11, Zuleika our free-spirited narrator, the daughter of a nouveau-riche immigrant African merchant is married off to an older, mostly absent Roman businessman looking for a trophy wife. While her husband is away, Zuleika (also called Zuky-dot, Zee, Za Za, etc.) manages to fill up her otherwise mundane existence by cavorting with old friends (including a cross-dressing nightclub owner), assembling her personal posse, mourning her lost youth, scheming against disrespectful servants, reading and writing poetry, and eventually having an affair with the Libyan-born Emperor Septimus Severus when he visits Londinium. The scene in which Zuleika attends a gladiatorial battle is not to be missed. British-born Evaristo's second novel (after Lara) is consistently amusing, clever, and inventive and even makes an indirect comment on present-day multicultural London. Poetry that reads like prose

I had to read this book for a seminar I was going to attend. Not being a great poetry reader I did not expect to enjoy it. I read the book in one session, and after the first few pages did not remember that I was reading poetry. It flows really easily, the language making it very easy to dive into the strange world of the author's Roman London. The modern slang and approach make the setting familiar in some ways, and then the very different customs of the period bring the reader up short. The scene set at the local "games" needs a strong stomach to read. Highly recommended.

The Emperor's Babe: Magnificent Verse-Novel about Roman-era London

I'm very happy I discovered this little-known book; I don't even remember how I first came across it. Regardless, it's one of the best "new" things I've read: a novel-in-verse from 2001 by Bernardine Evaristo about a young African woman in Roman London. This is a book filled with witty anachronisms, a deep heart, and lively poetry. Sadly Emperor's Babe appears to be out of print in the US, but used copies can be had for cheap. If you head over to Amazon's UK page you'll find the book is still in print on that side of the pond, and you'll also find two great reviews from Kirkus (great save for the comment by the Kirkus US reviewer, who loglines Emperor's Babe as "An episode of Sex and the City written by Ovid," apparently not realizing that Ovid wrote Amores and Art of Love, both of which ARE "Sex and the City written by Ovid").

Evaristo is a good poet, and her verses can easily be read as prose for those who are not poetically inclined. She keeps the narrative moving even though there isn't a whole lot of story. In a nutshell, we open in 204 CE with 11 year-old Zuleika, who's grown up on the streets of Londinium. As an African she stands out in a crowd; Zuleika's parents are immigrants from Sudan, and have come here to reap the benefits of a blossoming economy. Mostly ignored by them, Zuleika hops around town with her same-aged galpal Alba and her older friend Venus, a transvestite who runs Mt. Venus, a club which caters to fellow trannys.

One day Zuleika's spotted by Felix, an uber-wealthy Roman who has a villa in London (as well as several others around the Empire). After an arranged marriage which Zuleika's none to fond of, she withers away for a few years, a kept woman, sequestered in Felix's villa while the man himself is out gallivanting about the provinces. The story picks up a few years later, in 211. Zuleika, now 18, is close to the boiling point, frustrated with her boring life, missing her youthful exploits with Alba and Venus. Then one day at a theater performance she's spotted again, this time by visiting emperor Septimus Severus, who throws ga-ga eyes her way. Soon they are engaged in a torrid affair.

What makes the book so special is the anachronistic verve with which Evaristo writes. The gulf of time disappears between Zuleika's era and ours when we read that she's sent flowers from "Wild @ Heart, a trendy flower boutique," when Zuleika and pals watch a proto-punk band (complete with lead singer "Mad Marcia") perform at Mt. Venus, when we meet an African poet named "Manumittio X" who writes revolutionary verse which always begins with "Take these chains from my heart" and ends with "I just wanna be free." Not only this, but playful references to Armani and current pop culture and current British slang pepper the book, and rather than coming off as annoying it instead puts a big smile on the reader's face.

The characters are all fully realized, especially Zuleika - though this should be expected, as she narrates, her voice carrying the story. Septimus Severus comes off like the harsh-speaking ruffian he most likely was, though the book (and its back cover blurbs) misleads by referring to him constantly as "The African Emperor." This leads an uninformed reader into believing Severus was black, when in fact he was as caucasian as Caligula, despite his African birth. (Please note I state this only for historical clarity.) Alba is a tomcat who bickers with Zuleika endlessly, and Venus is a mentor with a heart of gold and a cache of one-liners. Even Felix comes off as likeable, despite that Zuleika says he's "thrice my age and thrice my girth," despite that he sequesters our heroine into a boring world, and despite that he engenders the tragic ending which casts a pall on what is otherwise a candy-colored romp through Roman London.

So then, a poem-novel to be enjoyed by a wealth of readers, from Classics buffs to chicklit fans to those who look for anything out of the norm. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, the anachronisms delight, and the characters stay with you. Decades ago Fellini boasted that his film "Satyricon" was a science fiction movie, only taking place in the past rather than outer space; Bernardine Evaristo can lay a greater claim to having accomplished this: her story takes place in a world utterly alien yet somehow familiar.
