A fairly good text book

This book does give a good idea of the subject. However, I found that it is rather basic, and is suitable more as a text book, and not for the purpose that I was looking. As a person experienced in business and manufacturing, and having recently entered the retail segment, I was looking for a book that would give me more in-depth information on the subject.

Eine wunderbare, interessante Kritik und Fragestellung ueber die Rolle der modernen Wissenschaften in der heutigen Gesellschaft. Ein Physiker macht as ob er verrueckt waere und findet sich im Irrenhaus. (Indem er sagt, er hoere Koenig Solomon.) Er begegnet drei anderen verrueckten Physikern, die tatsaechlich Spionen sind, die von drei Maechten geschickt worden sind. Sie wollen ihn ueberzuegen, er sollte mit ihnen gehen, weil er als Physiker das sogenannte "Unified Field Theorem" entdeckte. Hauptfragen: Koennte dieses Wissen misgebraucht werden? Kann man Wissen zuruecknehmen? Falls so oder nicht, auf welche Weisen sind Wissenschaftler und Forscher fuer ihre Entdeckungen moralisch verantwortlich? Eben meine Lieblingsdrama!

Dieses Buch ist leicht zu lesen, da es nur weniger Vorkenntnisse bedarf und gibt doch einen sehr tiefen Einblick in die verschiedenen Ansichten einiger Physiker. Auch das Ende diese Werkes wurde gekonnt gestaltet, denn es regt den Leser an sich selbst mit dem besagten Thema zu beschaeftigen. Wer dieses Buch versaeumt hat zu lesen, sollte es unbedingt nachholen, denn es gehoert einfach zur Allgemeinbildung.

At first readers will find those photos as fake as 16-year-old Jacob does, believing them to be nothing more than false memories that helped his grandfather survive WWII. But when monsters prove to be real and kill Jacob’s grandfather, the boy must flee to an island off the coast of Wales to find the “peculiar” children who sheltered his grandfather, who will help Jacob learn who he is, and who he will, in the end, have to save from the monsters. Jean’s scratchy black-and-white line drawings perfectly detail Jacob’s mundane life until he discovers the island’s secrets and color comes winging in. Ransom Riggs grew up in Florida, where he spent his formative years making silly movies with his friends in their various backyards, snorkeling, and complaining about the heat. After reading the novel I was just so curious about the graphic novel version that I had to buy it which was interesting for all of about 5 mins. The artwork and detail are impressive but the novel conveys the story much better as well as infusing the story with the sinister quality that just makes it so fun!

After all this comic is pretty cool. It leaves out some important details but after all th art is cool and they did a pretty good job. Just a tip for further readers is that it helps a lot if you read the book book before this because it helps you understand it more.

the original book is so amazing - but I felt I lost so much with the graphic novel. no pictures really, and the severity of the situation, the character development, and the writing is all missing. seems almost like a plot sketch, instead of the book I love so much

He has published several successful Cengage Learning texts, including WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY (senior author and general editor); WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A BRIEF HISTORY; the leading Western Civilization reader, SOURCES OF THE WESTERN TRADITION; AN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF MODERN EUROPE; SOURCES OF EUROPEAN HISTORY SINCE 1900 (senior editor); HUMANITIES IN THE WESTERN TRADITION (senior author and general editor); and WORLD WAR II IN EUROPE: A CONCISE HISTORY. James R. Jacob was Professor of History (now retired) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. His publications include ROBERT BOYLE AND THE ENGLISH REVOLUTION (1978) and HENRY STUBBE: RADICAL PROTESTANTISM AND THE EARLY ENLIGHTENMENT (1983). James R. and Margaret C. Jacob have jointly edited THE ORIGINS OF ANGLO-AMERICAN RADICALISM (1983). As co-author of the Cengage Learning text WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY he contributes the chapters on the Renaissance and European Expansion.

Margaret C. Jacob is a well-known scholar in early modern European history, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her most recent book is THE FIRST KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY. HUMAN CAPITAL AND EUROPEAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 1750-1850. She currently teaches in the history department at UCLA. Her publications include: THE NEWTONIANS AND THE ENGLISH REVOLUTION (1978) and THE RADICAL ENLIGHTENMENT: PANTHEISTS, FREEMASONS, AND THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION (1981). James R. and Margaret C. Jonathan Daly is Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Mr. Wonderful delivers on one front, fails on another

As an autobiography of a television personality, this book gets five stars. It's endlessly entertaining, really difficult to put down, and gives a fair bit of "behind the scenes" coverage of Dragon's Den, and a little bit for Shark Tank. That includes a chapter on pointers for potential pitchers for the shows. Most of his tips, you would think, are pretty basic, and should be known to anybody appearing on the show. But if you've seen the show, you'll know that they aren't. Also informative is an analysis of his fellow Dragons, what they look for in businesses and potential partners.

Mr. Wonderful has clearly lived a very interesting, somewhat charmed life. And though this isn't a "warts and all" kind of book, he gets away with glossy finish by showing the same kind of chutzpah he shows on both t.v. shows. Yeah, we haven't really got an entirely candid account of his life, but when it's this entertaining, do you really care?

As a business book, it gets one star. It's a complete disaster. Though he writes with great flourish, he doesn't demonstrate any kind of command over his subject matter. Compare that to his fellow Dragon Arlene Dickinson, who's book isn't well-written or organized, but who is completely convincing on her core subject matter of communication and persuasion. Kevin, in contrast, comes across as a really entertaining snake oil salesman.

Consider if somebody won the lottery, then decided that since they've accomplished that, they're qualified to write a book about how other people can do it. This book kind of reads like that. Kevin's advice is almost entirely based on his own experiences, which is a little surprising given that he has an MBA and should be better able to back it up with something along the lines of generally accepted principles of management. But he doesn't. Nor could he: his management style seems to be less Ken Blanchard and more Caligula. He advocates an approach to human resources that I think would, alone, bankrupt most companies: just go hire people, and fire them whenever you feel like it. Like, for example, if the person wants to do things like sleep, eat, see their family one day a week, those constitute grounds for termination. I'm exaggerating, but not by a whole lot.)

Included in his advice on how to get rich is, if you get married, make sure your wife is great at raising children, because you're never going to see them. Work-life balance? Forget it. That's for poor people.

His advice for investing is, if there's a company or sector that looks profitable, but you don't fully understand, just stay away from it, and move on to something else. Well, that approach isn't unheard of: that's how Warren Buffett approaches investing. But Buffett is 81 years old and has more money than God. He doesn't need to learn new stuff. If you're a 25 year old MBA at an investment firm, how is that kind of approach going to go over? "Well, it looked promising, but I didn't fully understand it, so even though I could have taken a little time and learned all about it, I chose to just move on to something less challenging." I get where Kevin is coming from -- he acknowledges the problems he has had with dyslexia over the course of his lifetime, and maybe that approach is one that he needs to take. But as a principle of general application, for everyone, it's just b.s.

That's really the problem with everything in the book. He made his money at a particular time, in a particular way. Things have changed a great deal since then. His story of taking $25,000 and turning it into a $4 billion company is, now, just a story, and what he's shouting from the rooftops now is, "Hey everybody, let's go and make 8-10%!" Sorry, Mr. Wonderful, but 8% really is just not that wonderful.

I work in the financial services industry (in retirement planning) and like reading books about managing money. I'd read O'Leary's book, "The Cold Hard Truth On Men, Women and Money", last month and enjoyed it.

This is his story from the time he was a kid and the lessons he learned from his mom and stepdad, realizing he is an entrepreneur not an employee, starting his first business in his basement, becoming a millionaire, his highs and lows and more. As a fan of Dragons' Den and Shark Tank, it was interesting to get the scoop on these shows ... he even provides tips on how to provide the perfect pitch. Along the way, there are quizzes and tips to see if you have what it takes to make the sale (I don't), if you are an employee or an employer (I'm an employee), rules for a successful partnerships, how to be a star employee, how to be a great boss, etc.

I liked the writing style and thought it flowed well. Since I watched the author on "Dragons' Den" and "Shark Tank", I would hear "Mr. Wonderful's" voice in his writing ... it's direct and there's no BS. He says he has no qualms about whacking (aka firing) someone and I believe it. There are pictures throughout the book of him and his family throughout the years, even pictures of Kevin with hair!

I'd recommend this book ... it was an interesting and entertaining read.

Great book for the entrepreneur

Fantastic book that enlightens you to Uncle Kevin's past business history. From pet food saleman (who actually ate it!) to billionaire software company. The basic premise for Mr. Wonderful's success is hard work and frugality. He discusses how to manage your business and the people in it.

I wish he went in to more detail about his storage company he flipped for a few hundred million. More specifically talk about how he set it up, how he saw the opportunity, how did he find his partners and a bit more spoon feeding/template about how he built this company from the ground up. I think most people reading the book would relate more to starting a storage company up compared to a software/educational company.

There's not many products which pop up on Dragon's Den that Kevin does not know intimately and made a wack load of money off. Now when I see people coming in with their idea's I think "Uncle Kevin actually knows this market better than you and has made a few million off this already!".

Indispensable as an introductory book on MMIC design

I'm a microwave engineer versed on hybrid circuits and discretes, rather than monolithic. This books gives you the basis to understand the issues involved in the design of MMICs, from topologies to fabrication processes and device specs. Plenty of microphotographs of actual circuits and examples to help understand what is explained. True it doesn't enter in great detail about math and deep calculations (neither is this it's goal), but after grasping the fundamentals with this book you can move onto more specialized articles and books on transistors and design strategies (Lee, Robertson/Lucyscin, lll-V devices by Liu...) Very very very readable and understandable. Unfortunately, you'll realize you have reached last page sooner than you expect and wish...

A must have, IMHO.

No more excuses!

What a simple, elegant concept - thinking inside the box - the precept shattering perspective behind The Houdini Solution. Not only is it brilliant, it's damn true. The best ideas often do happen in the box, and, with all the realities beyond our control, if you can't succeed there, well, good luck.

As a creative thinking coach, weekly I work in different industries helping people find fresh ideas. I have yet to encounter an area in business - hell, any area of human endeavor - that doesn't have to deal with a box, be it the boss' preconceptions, the industry's regulations, the budget, the deadline, whatever. Ernie Schenck points out, in story after story, illustration after illustration, some very big ideas that emerged not only in spite of the box, but frequently because of it. I won't steal the thunder here. Read the book. The only major flaw most readers might find between these pages is that it takes away almost all your excuses for not having great ideas.

No Escaping It

It's one thing to come up with a provocative insight. It's quite another to make a case for it so airtight Houdini himself would have a hard time wriggling out of it. But that's what Mr. Schenck does here. His core premise flies in the face of conventional wisdom: that rather than trying to "think outside the box", one is far more likely to arrive at genuinely creative, innovative solutions by making the most of what's "inside the box." In other words, all those things that are normally considered to be impediments to the process--short deadlines, minuscule budgets, recalcitrant clients and tight strategies--can actually be inspirational providing they are looked at in the right way, a point he drives home again and again with instructive examples and amusing anecdotes. All of which may come as a rude awakening to the many corporations and advertising agencies that subscribe to this "out of the box" notion. (And employ legions to consultants to steer them in the direction of this mythical destination.) But if it motivates a few of them to get out of this "box" trap, they'll have the inside track to more creative, innovative ideas.

Contrary to ad-world myth, good advertising is not created by gods who inhabit an unachievable pantheon of genius. This book affirms that small staffs, limited dollars, and constraints of the sort that all creative people live with can be overcome, and may also drive better thinking.
