About the Author
Janet MacLeod Trotter was brought up in the North East of England with her four brothers, by Scottish parents. She is a best-selling author of 15 novels, including the hugely popular Jarrow Trilogy, and a childhood memoir, BEATLES & CHIEFS, which was featured on BBC Radio Four. Her novel, THE HUNGRY HILLS, gained her a place on the shortlist of The Sunday Times' Young Writers' Award, and the TEA PLANTER'S LASS was longlisted for the RNA Romantic Novel Award. A graduate of Edinburgh University, she has been editor of the Clan MacLeod Magazine, a columnist on the Newcastle Journal and has had numerous short stories published in women's magazines. I can't believe I am the first to write a review for this book. I could not put it down, the fight for Womans rights and the way the poor were treated . I wish the ending had not been so short I wanted to know more of what happened to Maggie. Buy this book, you won't regret it or forget it.

Excellent Read

This book is awesome. You are taken into the life of the heroine,a suffragette,Maggie, from childhood to her late twenties. You weep with Maggie and feel triumphant at her successes. Her principles,determination and optimism in the face of adversity teaches wonderful life lessons. Maggie's struggle in finding true love and then sacrificing it makes one admire her character. I loved this book, it is well written and full of surprises that keeps you reading. I would love to see a book 2, about Maggie, her daughter and perhaps her return to her true love. Bravo Janet Trotter, once again you have weaved a fantastic story.

fascinating historical novel

A fascinating historical novel about the women's suffrage movement in England. The main character throws herself wholeheartedly into the radical suffrage movement, gets herself arrested, force-fed in prison. Hard to believe women were actually treated so badly but this makes it real for us today. There is also alot of focus on the double standards of the day, women having little or no recourse in domestic violence situations, and how badly unwed mothers were treated. This book will hold your interest from beginning to end.
