This is the first time I have ever used Amazon to buy a book and at first I was kinda sceptical. You know buying the book online and it not being what you expect it to be, but, the book was in excelent condition and everything worked out great. The only thing though was the mailing part of this process, it took a little longer than expected but worked out okay anyway. Over all i will more than likely start buying more from amazon!

In Nightmare Island two Marines from a small South Carolina town land on Guadalcanal's Red Beach on August 7, 1942. They fight with Edson's Raiders on Bloody Ridge when it is attacked by an overwhelming Japanese force and go on the longest patrol behind enemy lines of the war with Carlson's Raiders. This is the story of how two men, one young enough to be the other's son, struggle to stay alive together in this vicious new war in the Pacific.

When one of them carves the first two notches on the grips of the 45 automatic given to him by his nine year old son to help him fight the Japanese, he is close to losing his life and very nearly his mind.

How does war without mercy change them? Will they both survive?

All but lost to history, Guadalcanal was the first combined land, sea and air victory of the war. Vicious, brutal and personal, it stopped the Japanese advance across the Pacific, changed the momentum of the war and gave hope to the people at home. Code named "Watchtower" it was Known as “Operation Shoestring” to those who were there. It lasted six brutal months during which the First Marine Division, sick, malnourished, shell shocked and battle fatigued, hung on by a thread through attack after attack from superior Japanese forces.

This is their story through the eyes of two fictional Marines who, with the rest of them, fought every day to stay alive.

Historical fiction with great history and very good fiction

This is an outstanding historical novel with the emphasis on the history more than the fiction. That said, the fictionalized part the book, centering on a middle-aged Marine cartographer and a 17-year-old sharpshooter, both from the same South Carolina town, doesn’t disappoint.

The history is even more captivating and evidences a huge amount of research on the part of the first time novelist. I have read a lot of WWII in the Pacific stuff, going back to Richard Tregaskis’s Guadalcanal Diary, probably the first war account that I ever read as a young teenager in the mid-1950s. From McClure’s book, I have learned a remarkable amount about this most important WWII land battle of 1942. I knew nothing about the naval Battle of Suva that happened as the first Marines were hitting the beaches of the Canal. Generals Vandergrist and Edson were merely names to me before reading of their crucial role during the entire Marine deployment of the battle.

There are a number of amazing set pieces in the book that I will long remember. One involves a flight of a plane carrying the protagonist to the Island in which, to escape marauding Zeros, the pilot took refuge in a huge thunderstorm. They escape but not without a near-death confrontation with the elements. Another involves a description of the aftermath of one of the early encounters of the Marines and a contingent of Japanese on an invasion beach. It is truly harrowing.

My one complaint about the Kindle version of the book is that it lacks maps. I would love to be able to see the locations of the multiple naval battles, the crucial airstrip, the “Slot,” etc. I understand that the hard copy will have those maps.

Word has it that there are more books coming from this fine author. I anxiously await their release.

Personal and military and social history meld for an engrossing read.

A gripping telling of the personal story of a son of a once privilged Southern family thats falken on hard times. Good character development lends immediacy to the skillfully woven-in saga of Guadalcanal and the deserted and abandoned Marines who held on and prevailed against overwhelming odds reversing what had been the inevitable seeming domination of the Japanese War Machine. Shifting points of view make a complex human and military understandable and palpable for the contemporary reader. But wait! There's more to come in the remaiming two volumes of this trillogy.

Excellent read!

While I had trouble with the violence, I had to give it a 5-star rating because it was so well-written and beautifully researched. Mr. McClure's vocabulary is astounding and his writing style interesting and most informative. I could not put the book down until I was finished. I understood that the level of violence was necessary to the story because after all this was a horrific war, and no amount of sugar coating could change that. I personally have a hard time reading violence even when it's true, but this book was so good I had to keep going!

About the Author
Dr. Donald H. Cunningham, professor of English and coordinator of technical and professional communication in the Department of English at Auburn University, is author of a number of college textbooks. He has served as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and was founding editor of The Technical Writing Teacher (now Technical Communication Quarterly). He also has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Conference on College Composition and Communication. He is a fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and the Society for Technical Communication. He was awarded the Society for Technical Communication Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching Technical Communication.

Dr. Thomas E. Pearsall, professor emeritus and former head of the Department of Rhetoric at the University of Minnesota, is author of a number of college textbooks. He has served as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and is the founder and first president of the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication. Dr. Pearsall is a fellow of both the Society of Technical Communication and the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing. He is listed in Who�s Who in America and the Who�s Who is the World.

Great book

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This is a great book for someone who is looking to beef up their business writing skills. I really like it as a 'reference' manual. It shows examples of how to write and communicate in the business world, basically what to and what not to say and do.

It is also easy to read and understand, which is a big plus for an educational literary work.

Could use some updating.

This is a good book to give you detailed information on different kinds of writing you might do at an office. The only problem with the book is that it was written in the early 2000s, making for a very boring computer chapter, because they were talking about how to use different programs like we have never seen a computer before. I think that this book needs to be updated, especially the chapter on computers, but other than that, definitely a good resource for everything business related, including reports, resumes, e-mails, memos, letters of all kinds, among other things.

" Discord" is a learned and enjoyable story of noise and a treasure trove of curious facts and anecdotes.
It contains a long history of uses and annoyances from the big bang to battles to traffic noise. You will find the remarkable ways in which some animals, such as shrimps, use noise as a weapon or to catch prey; how medicine uses noise to shatter kidney stones or how it was employed positively in some aspects of music.

One misses perhaps a stronger contrast to music as the great antagonist to noise and chaos? What is the nature of this difference?
Noise appears to be a timely subject as a new tome Noise: A Human History of Sound and Listeningpromises to deal with similar material. Great book for getting your feet wet!

If you're looking for a good introduction to syntax, this is a wonderful book for that purpose. Tallerman's prose is clear and understandable and the examples clearly explain the concepts. The book is organized well and both indices and contents pages do their jobs well, something I've found rare in many textbooks.
The questions, however, can sometimes be quirky. The data can be minimal in the extreme and instead the question itself leads the student to the answer. This can make the questions seem just a rehash of the chapter instead of exercises that develop the student's skills. Depending on the professor, it can leave students unprepared for tests and quizzes. These quirks are rare, though, and most exercises help the student well enough.
I'd recommend this book for those learning syntax on their own or for really basic courses in syntax. This isn't really a graduate level book by itself, although with supplements or another more advanced text it is a great way to introduce students to syntax before moving on to the harder stuff later on in the semester.

Good book for students with little background in linguistics

Good book for students with little background in linguistics, besides the basic "intro to linguistics" class, and maybe even without it. I think the appeal of this book in on its use of several examples from languages around the world, and a down-to-Earth presentation of the main notions in syntactic argumentation. It is not a book that presents any theoretical framework in particular (or in general), but you can tell it assumes some basics tenets of Generative Linguistics, like innatism, independence of syntax from semantics and pragmatics, and discretely defined grammatical categories. However, those are, by and large, mainstream ideas that every students must know. Besides that, it is not theoretically "heavy", and that is a plus to me when offering a general class to inform students about the core notions and debates on a field of knowledge. Specialization can come later, when the foundations have been provided, and this books does that job just right.

More of an introduction to linguistics

It is a good introduction to linguistics, however this book doesn't necessarily focus on syntax. It explains how languages work. What it isn't is an overview of syntax from phrase structure rules, through Xbar theory, to minimalism.

Having bought the excellent Understanding Pragmatics book (in this same series) to fill in large gaps in my knowledge of that subject, I bought this book hoping to refresh my knowledge of Xbar and especially subsequent movements in syntax.

This book was well written with a balance of technical information presented in an understandable style. The fact that it was written and published in the UK made the metric references a little difficult to follow. The new decriptions of hybrid and electric vehicles was extremely useful as more and more of them are introduced to the American buying public. As a trainer for an automotive group, it will be useful as a refernce book.

chapters are hit or miss

This book is meant to give an overview of how an automobile functions. After reading this book, you will have a somewhat better understanding of the jargon used by a professional auto technician. Most chapters are fairly clear and concise. The weakest chapter is, by far, Chapter 3: Drivetrain. It is as if though another author wrote it - very hastily. Many terms are undefined. Despite having a technical background, this chapter was incomprehensible to me. The book overall, however, is a solid attempt at giving you a crash course in auto basics. There are plenty of useful illustrations, and lots of tidbits information regarding auto design. I'd recommend this book for anyone over the age of 13 or so.

I have read many books on the Kabbalah. A Kabbalistic Universe is probably the best one amongst all the ones I have read. It is easy to understand and at the same time it is adequately detailed. Thank you Z'ev Ben Shimon for writing it and thank you Dr. Mitra Makbouleh for recommending it. Of course it is not a book that can be retained with one reading and I plan to read it several times, but it is very pleasant reading.

Kabbalah for beginners...

This book is fantastic! It is very accessible to a beginner but still retains the complexity that naturally comes with outlining Kabbalah. Highly recommended. I didn't purchase my own copy off of Amazon because I was lucky to find one for very cheap elsewhere but the book is definitely worth purchasing.

Not a book to take lightly

Someone had recommended this book to me last year. I hesitated about buying it because the sugbject of Kabbala has, thanks to Madonna, gotten a bit commercial over the years. There is nothing commercial or frivolous about this book. It's not a quick read, that's for sure. You read a few pages and you put it down and think. Love, love, love this book. Will re-read it after I finish the five other books I'm reading.
