An Academic Study

I've been a vegetarian for 18 years, and was vegan for about two years. The thing that caught me completely off guard at the start, and still manages to confound (and irritate!) me, is the negative reaction from family, friends, and complete strangers. I am continually amazed at the vitriol, thinly disguised as "humorous" sarcasm, that I endure from some people. While I don't criticize people for eating meat, many seem perfectly comfortable criticizing me for my choice not to eat meat.

Given that background, I was thrilled to come across this book. I was hoping for insight into why certain people become angry, while others feel the need to avoid me, particularly in regards to sharing meals. I was also interested in the lifestyle choices that often come with the choice to be vegetarian or vegan, and society's assumptions regarding those choices. This book does offer that information, to some degree, though getting there requires patience.

First, the 'introduction' is excessively long, about 25 pages. This in itself isn't as much the problem as the content. It reads like a dissertation proposal, with language that is dry and academic.

Then we move on to the book's content. I was looking forward to a kind of broad cultural exploration. But much of the book's focus is quite narrow. Multiple chapters cover specific TV shows and movies in regards to what is sometimes an obscure portrayal of vegan diet and lifestyle. The author dissects these shows, finding, within them, issues pertaining to vegans that many of us might not even have picked up on. I have not seen most of these shows and movies (True Blood, The Year of the Flood, etc.). Without that context, and with absolutely zero interest in these programs/movies, I found the discussion difficult to get through. The writing remains dry and removed, academic rather than narrative, making it harder to find footing without context.

I read a lot of nonfiction, and I'm rarely bothered by academic-style writing. But, while this book has a few nuggets of information, the whole of it feels more suited to a college classroom as part of a specific discussion. That might well have been the intention, in which case the content will inspire some interesting debates. However, I don't see this book crossing over into the mainstream, which is disappointing.

Now I know what a Hegan is....

The thing that makes this book so cool is the way that Wright places 9/11 as a signpost for a shift in the way that American society represented and treated veganism. The book traces the history of veganism in the United States, and it plays around with the concept of a field of “vegan studies” as something distinct from traditional food studies or animal rights. The texts that are analyzed are diverse: television and film, news stories about such things as “death by veganism,” the link (or lack of link) between veganism and eating disorders, and the ways that celebrity veganism is a mixed bag of certain benefits to the vegan cause (if there can be such a thing, and I think Wright’s text correctly argues that there isn’t a single cause or identity that vegans adopt) and a hindrance to veganism.

Wright has done something totally different from anything out there. Her book is well-written and damn smart. It’s simultaneously a gender studies, animal studies, and food studies work of history, anthropology, and literary criticism. Cultural studies works are often too dense to be particularly appealing to a general audience. This one is tough at times – but it’s tough in ways that are rewarding – but it’s never inaccessible or uninteresting. It’s a book that charts a new and unmarked territory in fascinating ways that are, quite frankly, groundbreaking and compelling.

Diggs-Brown is President and CEO of The Center for Strategic Research and Communication, a 501(c)(3) organization. Not too Bad Overall

Overall the shipping was great I paid a little extra for expedited but don't think I really needed to now since it came so fast, took about 2 days. Only complaint is the description didn't say it was a PAPERBACK or Instructors addition. I really wish I would have known that because while I think/hope it will work but since I'm a student I needed the student copy and would have preferred hardcopy, and I was disappointed at the amount of used sticker that was placed on the book when it said excellent condition, never used. The inside is perfect and NO highlighting which is awesome. I'm just a little unhappy at the instructors addition and the paperback.

Although an HEA, would've liked a better ending

I enjoyed this book, however, she needs someone to help her edit this book. There quite a few grammatical errors throughout the book as well as some places where you could definitely tell a word was missing from the sentence. I kept thinking 'did she even bother to look over this book for errors?' because there were some spots that were very obvious that something was wrong. My only other qualm is that the ending was a HEA, it felt very abrupt because they have a scene with the parents and it was pretty much like "if you don't like it, oh well" and then "The End". That made it feel like the author was in a hurry to get the book done so she just wrote something real quick to end it. Even if she wanted to end the book with being confronted by the parents, I think it could've been better executed with maybe the confrontation first and perhaps a small prolog ie. For instance, 2 months later. Other than those 2 things, I enjoyed the book.

There's a very decent amount of detail when you remember how much land is covered. Overall, a worthwhile purchase. Hoping there's an updated version soon.

Cute Colouring Book

I love turtles and colouring, so the Turtle Mandalas colouring book seemed like a perfect fit. The turtle pictures are very cute and whimsical. However, the lines aren't very crisp and sharp like you'd expect for a colouring book; they look a bit blurred. The pictures also don't fill the entire page. Which wouldn't be bad but they're not centered on the page and there's definitely a difference in the background colouring of the picture and the main page. Though aside from that it's a nice book and I've been enjoying it thus far.

Okay, but could be better.

The paper quality is good, thick pages. But, the graphics are somewhat bad. It looks like it was a small image that was Xeroxed to fill up the whole page. So I can't really give it a 5 star review since the graphics of the art is basically what you're paying for.

I always love getting the movie companions to films that I love. All the behind-the-scenes details and photos are great.

Only real bummer for me is that they didn't make one of these for Breaking Dawn Part 2. Instead there was some saga guide with lots of little inserts and stuff (or so I hear--I didn't get it) that probably appeals more to the young fans. Really disappointing that they didn't give the final film its due treatment, but nothing anyone can do about that now. Still, this is enjoyable just the same, and you can get a good feel for what the general production of BD was like.

Never Enough TWILIGHT

Not only with the Twilight series, but with any movie I really enjoy I always like to find out where scenes are shot and how, costuming, actors' comments, etc. You just have no clue how much work and planning goes into a two and a half/three hour flick. But, of course, this was special because so much went on in Breaking Dawn in regard to the relationships between Edward Bella and Jacob. And it's not over yet.....

He wasn’t sure what he’d do if they found his body to be as enticing as his blood. Of course, he wouldn’t mind it so much from one certain vampire…Easton. He’d let that vamp do whatever he wanted.

But as the heir apparent to Master Broman, Easton didn’t feed from him either. Darrian was considered tainted, only good enough for the lower class. It was probably for the best since Easton was arrogant and cruel.
Darrian’s entire life changed the day the clan was attacked and the impossible happened. Broman was gone, and Darrian was free. Or so he thought. For Darrian found himself in the middle of another clan…one that was very different than the one he’d been freed from. And the master…Kylor…was beyond anything Darrian had ever seen before.

The only problem? They failed to kill Easton…and it seemed he didn’t like Darrian belonging to another clan.

Surprise M/M/M. Not always a good thing

The sample was not bad so I bought this wondering how the story would continue and the unfortunate answer is... not well. *Spoilers*

The 'hero' already has a mate and after a complicated, clumsily fabricated excuse for why he is speshal and has multiple mates is revealed, we find out that the blood slave is is mate too. Yay.
Of course, existing mate is pissed the hell off but nobody really cares. Blood slave guy doesn't even like the hero but doesn't have anything better to do, so he decides to accept the mating. Stuff happens and then they somehow decide that they are all going to live happily ever after. The end.

So. I hate getting hit in the face with surprise m/m/m on a good day. Some authors have surprised me with it before, but I still enjoyed the stories. This is not one of those stories.

Hmmmm

2.5* So I'm not sure about this one. I did not like that I was not warned of the multiple rape scenes. I also did not like that this was not a fully consensual three some with one mate being visible hurt by his mate taking a second mate. The world was good and the story compelling but this one hit me wrong and ended abruptly leaving me feel like it was unfinished.

Violent Vampire Society

Really enjoyed this first book in the Vampire Wars series so much I book the rest of the books in the series before even finishing this story. This "Vampire" story caught my attention because of how it started off, with a Human Blood Slave telling horror story that was his life. It was tragic and vicious. Then we learn about the twist, a clan of them aren't regular Vamps, they are actually an old species thought to be extinct or a myth. They are called Dyads which is a combination of Vampire and Shifter. Literally Shifters who can shift into whatever Animal they choose. They have favorites, but the Vampire is the dominant half of their beings.

In this first story the reader is introduced to a whole new world full of True Vampires, Shifters, Humans, and the secretive Dyads. Instead of betas the Vampires have "kedges". The smaller, weaker True Vampires that can only feed from the clan Master are called Pyrinas. This is a violent society where Shifters and Humans are regularly captured and imprisoned to serve as Blood Slaves.

The governing Vampire and Shifter Councils have empowered certain clans in particular Kylor's Dyads clan to go after the Master vampires who are capturing, imprisoning, torturing, and killing Humans and Shifters. In this book Dyad Master Kylor meets his second mate when he infiltrates a vicious clan that treats Humans like an expendable food source. What happens next sets up the remaining stories in this series. More kedges and Vampires are introduced that will later play important roles in later stories.

If you like Vampire / Shifter stories you will enjoy this one. If Human mates being rescued interest you it's in here. If you like the good guys winning - this story will be a winner.
