About the Author
Scott Thornbury is Associate Professor on the MA TESOL program at the New School in New York, and has an MA (TEFL) from the University of Reading. His previous experience includes teaching and training in Egypt, UK, Spain, and in his native New Zealand. He has written extensively on areas of language and methodology, his most recent books being Beyond the Sentence: An Introduction to Discourse Analysis, and An A-Z of ELT (both Macmillan), Natural Grammar (OUP) which won a British Council ELT Innovations Award in 2004, and Grammar (OUP), which earned a special mention in the English Speaking Union awards for 2006, and Conversation: From Description to Pedagogy (with Diana Slade, CUP). He is currently the series editor of the Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers (CUP). He divides his time between New York and Barcelona.

The book didn't help.

I paid for this book because I read a previous review that said if I didn't take good notes, this would help me remember the content of the celta course. That is false. The book address TEFL generalisms but does not help with what is really important to pass the CELTA course. You have to learn the CELTA terminology and structure by heart if you want to pass. This book doesn't address CCQs, ICQs, ECDB, and all the other torturous acronyms involved in this course (aside from a glossary in the back). This book is irrelevant to passing and reviewing the CELTA course.

a good review for topics from the course

While I concentrated hard during my CELTA class, I didn't organize my notes well, so this book is a more convenient way of reviewing some of the topics.
On the downside, is that since the book (like the course) really wants the students to explore the topic and discover the conclusions, it is not as good as I had hoped in terms of being a reference afterwards.

They're not giving away the course

If you, like me, are looking to get a head start on the CELTA course before it starts, this is not going to help you. This book seems like more of a workbook than an actual textbook. It has many thought-provoking activities but it uses terminology that I can only assume is explained in greater detail in the actual course. For example, an explanation of the different student levels in terms of capabilities or teaching strategies.
That being said, I have some teaching experience and knowledge so I could fill in some gaps and I found the activities to be thought-provoking and helpful. There is also a lot of good advice.
So don't expect to get the course for $30 in this book, and don't expect it to be of much help as a beginning educator.

Every time I open this book, I keep praising the authors for their art. It looks impossible to cram so much information in such a little space. It contains information that sometimes you can't find in textbooks. I bought it for my ICU rotation, but since then I have been carrying it in my labcoat all the time.

Becky Tarver Chase is an experienced English instructor who has taught all subject areas including reading, writing, grammar, communication skills, and test preparation. She has worked at universities and in private programs in the United States, Mexico, and Thailand. The New Standard in EM Procedures

This book is extremely detailed and has great illustrations. I compared this book for many hours to Roberts & Hedges (R&H) 4th ed and this book blows it away. The entire procedure is fully explained (as in both books), but this book shows you numerous different locations and ways of getting the same procedure done. This seems to lack in R&H. Also, the illustrations are great. R&H uses mainly black and white photos from the 1970's/80's where the person was not even using gloves and there is a footnote in every picture to use gloves. I think R&H needs to use new updated pictures if they want to even compete with this book. The increased use of color, great illustrations with key landmarks, numerous charts, and ease of explanation make this book essential in any emergency physician's library.

As treasurer of Australia (at least until 7 September election) Chris Bowen's resignation from the turmoil of Julia Gillard ministry allowed him a period of six weeks to write his ideas about the ALP. Ideas of a Western Sydney parliamentarian wanting growth and opportunity for all but where universities are training for jobs; economies are for growth; politics simply ranges from the Greens on the Left to the Liberals on the Right; and little else except fairness matters.

A forward by former Prime Minister Paul Keating asks if Australia needs a Labor Party answering that the ALP as the "locomotive" lifting the great body of the community but having no "truck" with the traditional socialist objective. Yes, the language of Western Sydney.

Labor believes in growth and opportunity, according to Bowen; the Greens understand opportunity but do not understand growth; the Liberals understand growth but they do not understand opportunity. Opportunity for the kids from Western Sydney and Weipa but lacking is any idealism, environmental aims or limits to growth, the society Australia wants to create or the contribution our prosperity allows us to make to arts and science.

Bowen calls for a mass party which is reflective of the Australian population yet lauds the ALP's heritage and base. His call for ALP members to be involved in the choice of the party leader must dazzle for its unforeseen speed of implementation. As for the Greens, Bowen argues for governing alone or not at all.

"Hearts and Minds" provides a concise message to the ALP, his "clarion call to Labor's heartland", but accepts a one-dimensional Left/Right political view contra to a two-dimensional view which allows a mix of individual opportunity and protection of the environment necessary to appeal to a wider electorate than Western Sydney and Weipa.

A good, succinct summary of what the ALP should stand for

Hearts and Minds (2013) by Chris Bowen, the current treasurer of Australia is a rather good exploration of what the modern Australian Labor Party (ALP) stands for. The book is oddly named, not many people would name a book of rejuvenation after a failed slogan from a failed war. It should also be said upfront that this journey into the heart of darkness does at no time wind up with Bowen meeting the strange `Colonel Rudd' deep in the Queensland jungle during an election campaign and nor does he declare at any stage that `we had to destroy the electorate in order to save it'. But nonetheless, we can all be thankful Bowen didn't call the book `My Struggle'.
Bowen looks at what the ALP believes in and decides that reclaiming liberalism from the right is an aim. He puts forward economic growth and increasing opportunity as the main objectives of the modern ALP. There are two chapters devoted to each of these aims.
Bowen starts with a chapter on what, in general, the ALP believes in. Bowen includes the official objectives of the ALP that include anachronistic references to the socialisation of industry. Bowen points out that this has nothing to do with the way the modern ALP governs. Bowen has read, and refers to some interesting figures like Tony Crosland who argued in the 1950s that increasing wellbeing was more important for the left than government ownership. Roy Hattersley went further to declare that the true objective of socialism is to create a society where individual liberty is greatest. It's interesting, and perhaps redefines socialism to an unrecognizable form but it is worth considering. In Bowen's eyes this contrasts what the modern left should be doing to what the modern right does, which is to adopt much of the thought of Hayek, von Mises and Friedman.
There is then a good sized chapter on the ALP being the party of growth, which is all about how Hawke and Keating put through many important deregulatory, pro-market and some other reforms that are largely well regarded. There is a problem in that the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd government has a poor record here. Bowen remarkably argues that the Carbon Tax created jobs as some academic argued that you can regulate your way to higher productivity. It's more than a bit of a stretch.
The chapter on Opportunity highlights how by removing fees for University under Whitlam the ALP increased educational opportunities and then by bringing them back it again increased educational opportunities. Apparently whatever the ALP does to fees has magic properties. But overall this chapter does highlight what the ALP thinks it does differently to the Liberal Party.
Bowen then puts in his ideas for reforming the ALP which are well put and put into an international context. His arguments for changing the way the ALP leader is chosen are well put forward. He doesn't really consider the counter argument, namely that it isn't a broken system and in the past 50 years the only mistake the ALP has made was removing Rudd. The chapter also makes other recommendations on how to elect delegates for conventions and other ideas.
Bowen concludes the book with a few remarks summarising his positive vision for the future of the ALP. The book is nicely short, it's well thought out, well written and really does put forward a reasonably coherent vision of what the ALP should be. There is a bit of silliness and little recognition of the contribution of the Liberal Party's contribution to Australia, but that's fine for this kind of book. It's really quite a refreshing read and a good antidote to the fairly dour election campaign that is currently going on.

You can actually gain from this book!

If this is the same book I had many years ago in my own high school days, I can proudly say it taught me a lot about the English language. We used to make small flashcards with the word on one side, and the meaning on the other, and quiz ourselves and others about them every week. It really does help, though I'm sure many students don't want to take the time to learn, and that would be unfortunate. At our school way back when, we had a stiff curriculum and I look back now with the realization that even while we hated it then, the final experiences will live with me forever, and that's a GOOD thing.

Pretty Things for Nice People is a delightful memoir and behind-the-scenes view of what is arguably the most respected and influential firm of artisans who worked in twentieth century New York City. Pretty Things is written by one of the nicest people of all, Joseph Fiebiger, who took the reins of his family's metalworking company in the late sixties. In this book Fiebiger uses a breezy, accessible tone to lead the reader through a candid, and often witty, tour of a sampling of projects that include major restorations of public buildings and original masterpieces, rendered on both the colossal and domestic scale. The journey begins with a small commission for an iron fence for a church in Brooklyn and culminates with massive restorations of two American treasures, The Statue of Liberty and the main building at Ellis Island, which has the largest copper roof in the country.

The "pretty things" part of the book offers insight into the technical challenges and the firm's often novel solutions. By way of explaining how the projects were completed by orchestrating teams of people with varied skills--be they in the form of design, metallurgy, or hands-on metalworking-- Fiebiger is unstinting in offering well-deserved praise for each person's valued contributions. However, Fiebiger is equally free in offering his perspective on some of the interpersonal difficulties encountered, especially with the larger, high-budget, high-profile works.

The "nice people" part of the book's title signifies a non-technical aspect of each project. I just finished reading the book" Pretty things for nice People" written by Joe Fiebiger and I'll have to say is is absolutely Fantastic!!!
His writing style is fun and and allows the reader to peak inside a life that was filled with wealthy and powerful people and to see just what it takes to help these clients get what they want . Joe' s company P A Feibiger was the leading Decorative Metal working company in New York and provided the very best of Forged and delicately fabricated metalworkthat the nation has ever seen . Under Joe's Direction he took on some serious challenges , such as restoring the Statue of Liberty as well as creating new Ironwork fences at the Frick Museum in NewYork City. All this work matched the original Masterpieces in exactness and spirit! This book is a real treasure in that Joe loves to add little back stories about the clients and the jobs that became real challenges for the companies master craftsmen as well as Joe himself. The book includes many funny stories that Joe conveys about New York socialites as well as well known real estate developers that will leave you in stitches.

"Pretty Things....." is a nice read

Joe Fiebiger (author) is a modern day business man. He has taken over the family Iron Works business handed down from his father and grandfather (founder) - their memory is with his every move.
The early chapters in the book discuss people who were very influential in Joe's career. The bulk of the book looks at projects done for such notable clients as Brooke Astor and Donald Trump. A good portion of the book gives an in-depth accounting of Joe's signature project, the Restoration of the Statue of Liberty, in the 1980's.
Throughout the book, Joe interjects his own feelings as problems and awkward situations arise. Joe is an interesting guy and I found myself laughing at his "off the cuff" comments.
I enjoyed the book. It's an impressive list of names and places that kept me engaged throughout.
