The first of the Kingdom books by Cynthia Voigt

This is the first book in the Kingdom series. The heroine is a strong character with a quixotic streak, who learns the difficulty of helping other people -- it's not as easy as it seems! The writing is elegant, the plot is interesting and unusual, the characterization is excellent and you quickly grow to care for her and her family. The Kingdom is well-imagined, and it's interesting to see how separate the lives of the nobles are from the common people. I have read this book three times over a 14 year period, and still enjoy it as much as ever.

Read this book!

If you are thinking about reading this book I urge you to stop thinking and start reading. I read it for the first time as a teenager and have read it again so many times since then. I get lost in the Kingdom each time I enter it and I find that I cannot stay away from the series for very long. I especially recommend it for girls who are looking for inspiration and are tired of the damsel-in-distress stories that are so often marketed toward girls and women. So, stop reading reviews and just read the book!

This is one of my favorite books in the whole world. I have read it at least a dozen times. A very thought provoking, dramatic almost-fairy tale that challenges how we view the world and the stories that shape it, through an admirable, strong and clever young woman's eyes. Highly recommend!

Essential guide for surface designers

Although this book was written 20 years ago and everybody is going crazy over computerized textile design, this book is one of the finest guides for the beginning designer. The book contains beautiful examples of textiles designed by the author, many of them for Schumacher, which prove to be incredibly inspiring and leave on in awe of her talents.
Not only does the book cover technique, but it also provides advice as to developing a portfolio, interviewing, and working in the real world.
I recently did a freelance project and I referred to this book for guidance on how to invoice the client.
This is a book that should be on every textile/surface designers' reference library.

About the Author
After a near death experience from an addiction to prescription drugs, Michele Zumwalt has dedicated her life to helping others find hope and recovery. She is a devoted wife and mother of two beautiful daughters. Michele has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Her story was featured on the CBS Evening News, “Eye On America” and was highlighted on numerous television news, radio programs, and in newspaper articles. Michele has been the keynote speaker for recovery and medical groups such as the Sacramento Monthly Speaker Meeting, the University of California, Davis, medical student classes, etc. As an advocate for legislative advancement in treating drug addiction, she has successfully changed California State Law. She is a Law Enforcement Chaplain and a Critical Incident Stress Debrief Facilitator, assisting Police Officers after Officer Involved Shootings and the community in traumatic situations such as death notifications for the County of Sacramento. She serves as a Finance Elder and on the Vision Team for Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church. She sits on the Board of Directors for the American River Alano, which serves thousands seeking 12-Step recovery. Michele is Executive Director of a non-profit children’s charity, Contractors Caring for Kids, which she and her husband, John, founded in 1995. Over $500,000 has been raised for local children in need. She has a steadfast faith in God and her life’s purpose is found in serving Him by serving others.

About the Author
Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) wrote and illustrated some of the most honored and enduring children's books ever published. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent time in Boston, New York, and ultimately Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. The first ever two-time Caldecott Medal winner, for Make Way for Ducklings and Time of Wonder, McCloskey was also awarded Caldecott Honors for Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, and Journey Cake, Ho! by Ruth Sawyer.� He was declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000.� You can see some of his best-loved characters immortalized as statues in Boston's Public Garden and Lentil Park in Hamilton, Ohio.

A Timeless Story for All Ages!

Children naturally are interested in understanding a parent's perspective on the family. Mr. and Mrs. Mallard's search for a safe home for their future family makes a wonderful story for children and parents to explore and understand more about parental love. Although the book has a 4-8 age reading level, younger children enjoy having it read to them (based on the experiences of my four children). The illustrations are terrific and draw the child's interest very easily. Older children like to reread the story because of its comfortable connection to their more youthful years and reinforcement of their sense of being wanted, loved, and belonging.
To me, the best part of the book is that the locations are actually easy to find in Boston. So if you live in the Boston area or ever come here, you can also take your children to experience the story. I know my younger daughter thought that her first Swan boat ride in the Public Garden was the ultimate moment in her life (up to that point). She kept wanting to know which duck was Mrs. Mallard, and which one was Mr. Mallard. Then she wanted to spot Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack (my favorite name in the book), Pack, and Quack. I had a ball! There are also statues of Mrs. Mallard and her 8 offspring that the children can touch. There's also an annual parade that you can participate in.
If you don't know the story, here's a summary: Mr. and Mrs. Mallard were looking for a place to live where they could raise a family safely. Whenever Mr. Mallard found someplace he liked, Mrs. Mallard worried about foxes and turtles. Finally they got to the pond in the Public Garden in Boston, and were too tired to go on. So they spent the night on the little island there. The next morning they could not find much food, until the people on the Swan boats began to throw them peanuts. But the Mallards were almost run over by a bicycle, so they felt they needed a safer place. They tried several, but each had a drawback. Finally, they found an island in the Charles River not far from the Public Garden that met all their requirements. Michael, the policeman, fed them peanuts. Soon, Mrs. Mallard laid 8 eggs, and stayed to hatch them. After the ducklings were born, they learned to swim and walk single file behind their Mother. One day, she walked them towards the Public Garden. But they could not get across the highway. Michael spotted them and stopped the traffic so they could cross. He called Clancy at the station and told him to send a car to help Mrs. Mallard and the ducklings cross at the Public Garden. When in the pond there, they met Mr. Mallard on the little island. They decided to live there, and followed the Swan boats for peanuts after that.
I have enjoyed reading this story and reading it to children for almost 30 years. I look forward to reading it to my grandchildren when the time comes. It has also been my favorite book to give as a gift to new parents.
Enjoy the wonderful gift of warm family feeling in this book, and leave your stalled thinking about your cares and worries behind. It will remind you what is really important in your life!

A tip of the hat, one and all, to Mr. Robert McCloskey. The father of the delicately shaded picture book, his stories always contain simple plots and a bundle of warmth. "Make Way For Ducklings" (which battles with "Blueberries For Sal" for the title Best-Known-McCloskey-Story) is one of the author's strongest efforts. Bringing elements of rural and urban life together, it not only tells a great tale but remains timeless in its telling.
The story follows Mr. & Mrs. Mallard, a realistically portrayed duck couple. No animals in funny clothes here. The two settle on a small metropolitan island to lay their eggs. Once hatched it's up to Mrs. Mallard and her troop to walk to their new home in the central park with the help of their local police force.
In the sixty some odd years since its publication, "Make Way For Ducklings" has remained exactly the same. The closest it comes to dating itself (aside from the stately cars and "lending library") is that Mr. Mallard abandons his family to fly ahead to the save island. That's one way of looking at it. Another way is to point out that Mrs. Mallard is a capable mother who knows exactly how to lead her small brood. The book is fun, diverting, and illustrated beautifully. It does not pretend to be anything it isn't. It is the classic above all other classics. And it is McCloskey's greatest invention.

A classic that is a beloved story to read over and over. I wasn't sure how my boys would like it since the illustrations are simple, without color, but the story drew them right in. It's a favorite in our house.

Waterworks Galore

This book is incredible. Alex Sanchez is one of my favorite authors and has been since I discovered Rainbow Boys. His characters are so completely human and relateable. Diego's character is powerful not at all "fictionalized". Diego could be a real life walking person for as well as his character is written. He was instantly someone you cared about and rooted for.
This book had me crying like a faucet, at some points I didn't even know why I was crying except for just being so moved by the story. I would reccommend it to anyone who enjoys Alex Sanchez's work, as this might just be his best so far, or to anyone just looking for a good book.

This book is amazing! The plot, character development, language, diction, everything! So real and the perfect novel for anyone who can't grasp the roots of homophobia for some people and/or people who have been molested as children.

I wish this book when I was younger.

Alex Sanchez is my literary hero after this.

Though Diego is plagued by his demons, he desperately wants to find relief from it all so he can move on with his life.

It's a dream that you root for him to achieve and he's honestly a likeable character. He says and does the wrong things sometimes (though we all do) and that leads him into trouble, but he wants to be a better guy. He really is a good person. His anger just gets the best of him and he can't properly control it. Through all of that, though, you want him to be the man you know that he is and to get past the life he's been dealt.

The summary of BAIT doesn't give things away, so I don't want to, either, but this is an intense book that deals with big issues. It was definitely interesting and I'm very glad I was given the chance to read it.

Diego hates the idea of being called gay, but why? Is it a mere prejudice or something more? The story delves into the "something more" side that leaves you horrified. It's a realistic novel that will hopefully help some and inform others.

More than anything, I think this book brings up the topic of being honest with those you love. You have to trust them and hope they will be there for you when you need them to be. If they aren't, that's not your problem. It's just good to know you tried and that you can find help if you need it. It might be from unsuspecting people, but it might be from someone in your own house. You just don't know.

BAIT is the fourth novel I've read by Alex Sanchez, and it was very different from the others - but not in a bad way. It digs deeper into the psyche of human emotion and experiences, and I found that highly interesting, if not always enjoyable, to read.

Nice overview of interesting motorcars.

Always a very subjective topic as to what constitutes a cool car, but in this case Mr. Wilson did a pretty good job selecting the cars in his book.
DK book, which is usually a pretty good indicator of a quality book. Nice little blurbs about each of the cars he has chosen. If you like cars you could do far worse than this book. Small in size, but very thick. Nice book.

About the Author

Maxine Attong is passionate about writing, facilitation, and business process improvement. Her strong belief in the power of facilitated teams, the creativity of human beings, and the need for alignment between strategy and process has served as impetus to document her thoughts and experiences in the business process improvements field. Maxine is a graduate of the University of the West Indies (BSc., Accounting) and a Certified Management Accountant (Society of Management Accountants, Ontario). She is also a Certified Manager of Quality with the American Society for Quality, and a life and business coach. Maxine is the chief executive officer of eink Global Company Limited. The company exists to "enhance vision―one process at a time."

Terrence Metz is a founding principal partner and vice president at Morgan Madison and Company. For more than 20 years, through professional and academic endeavors, Terrence has focused on teaching people how to think rather than what to think. His experience has proven that the two most important components to high-quality decision making are:

1. Nobody is smarter than everybody.
2. There is usually more than one right answer.

Terrence is passionate about using and teaching facilitation so that people become more collaborative. He is the lead instructor and primary curriculum developer for MG Rush Performance Learning and introduced the concept of holism to the field of structured facilitation as a method for keeping meetings on target and aligning objectives across an entire organization. Great for beginners, but missing key elements

I recommend this book to the process improvement neophyte. It is an easy read and understandable. The book provides a straightforward improvement process with best practices and facilitation techniques. The improvement process starts with forming a process improvement team and selecting processes for analysis and ends with evaluating new process results. If you have never done a process improvement project before this is probably the best step-by-step manual with lots of details and tools.
However, as an experienced business analyst I give the book a three star rating due to some disappointments with the book's improvement process omissions.

* Value chains and the danger of improving only sub processes rather than the entire value chain is not addressed.
* Stakeholder resistance was identified as a concern, but not as a source of risk. Resistance was not listed as an entry on the risk register.
* Risk was not clearly delineated as threats and opportunities with separate risk registers.
* Leading and lagging process measurements for composing a new process owner dashboard was not discussed.
* Non-value activities required by auditors were not clearly highlighted. If these activities are eliminated an unsatisfactory audit could follow.
* A hierarchy of process improvement proposals based on levels of process owner risk tolerance was not clearly discussed.

Had the above items been addressed, this would be a dynamite book deserving of a 5 star rating. But, it doesn't. With these omissions, I believe the book is overpriced. Perhaps one might rationalize the price considering a CD containing various tools accompanies the book.

A refreshing return to a practical approach in addressing fundamental business issues

Within recent years we have been bombarded by a plethora of business and management books, which have encouraged us to adopt a range of esoteric ideas, represented by such figures as Sun Zu, Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Ghandi and even God, not to mention Star Trek, to provide answers to critical management issues. Maxine Attong's and Terrence Metz's book, "Change or Die: The Business Process Improvement Manual", is a refreshing return to a practical approach in addressing fundamental issues faced by businesses in today's world. The core strength of the book lies in its people centered approach and its involvement of employees at every stage of the business process improvement cycle. It confronts and provides clear and concise solutions for such critical issues as aligning goals and objectives to the overarching vision, determining the core processes that impact the business, change management and the establishment of teams that can effectively implement the improvements that are required. It provides an easy step-by-step methodology for substantially improving business processes and thus business performance. The book is filled with wonderful and perceptive insights that are often overlooked in today's business world, where the ethereal seems to have triumphed over substance. I strongly recommend this book

Great book!

Many business improvement programmes have stuck rigidly to one type of approach, however in today's global arena there is a new breed of recommendations for carrying out business process improvements. The new rules for such changes are highlighted in Attong and Metz, (2013) publication entitled Change or Die. The authors take a hybrid over- arching approach which draws on the good from previously identified methodologies and training techniques. The strategy applied to their methodology is one of facilitated teams and stakeholder engagement delivered through the creativity of individuals and the need alignment between strategy and process. Based on case studies their research summarises the types of engagement, team building and business process improvements that could be applied to a given project to bring about the desired end state. They conclude that no one person is smarter than everybody and that there is usually more than one right answer. Much of their research has included the use of Hurson's productive thinking model.

Clever and substantive

I base my comments on Edition 3, not 4. The book was funny, substantive, humble, and comprehensive. The organization was effective, and I learned how much knowledge about persuasion has changed since twenty years ago, the last time I taught a course on that subject. If I had to start over to learn about persuasion, this was an excellent way to do it!

A great book

As an undergrad, this was a great book to read. It's written in a conversational style, yet it is still detailed and comprehensive in research, meta-analyses, and examples. The authors also have a sense of humor...which is nice and used sparingly, yet makes it even more enjoyable to read.

It also has an chapter on ethics which some textbooks seem to disregard. There are also real-life situation info-boxes where people can learn and apply what they learn to purchasing new cars, making more tips, and how to ward off telemarketers.

I love this book a lot. I bought it long time ago while I was in college. I used this book as a practicing tool and guide for my debate skill and communication method. It did broaden my view and strengthen my points of view in things that were ambiguous before. I would recommend this book to anyone that is starting to learn about persuasion or interested in it. It's perfect for beginners and people who need a more systematic organization of their knowledge.
