Ideas such as "crop and soil weatherproofing," the "row support system," and the "tillage commandments," exemplify the practicality of the soil/root maintenance program that serves as the foundation for Schriefer’s highly-successful "systems approach" farming. Schriefer was a pioneer in developing an awareness of the relation of tillage to soil fertility, focusing on three major soil basics — soil aeration, soil water, and soil decay. This book covers such topics as soil chemistry, plant and soil dynamics, above- and below-ground plant management, row support fertilization, zone-tillage, disc-chiseling, and more. He focuses on reducing "yield-limiting factors" such as seed selection, excessive tillage and a dependence on technology.

About the Author
Donald Schriefer passed from this life in 1998. He had spent more than five years battling acute leukemia, but he did not lie down and wait for death to come. He left this manuscript as a legacy to his lifelong friends -- the farmers -- knowing that those left behind would have it published. One of America's first "environmental agronomists," he is best known for his consulting work on behalf of many of the country's largest, most successful farmers. His innovation in tillage systems, foliar feeding of crops, and soil fertility management earned him the respect of both conventional and ecological farmers. He contributed frequently to agricultural publications and was well known for his lectures and seminars. His other books include From the Soil Up and Tillage in Transition.

I can’t recommend this book
By David T Fulkerson
This book was referenced on a website and it prompted me to find a copy. Unfortunately I was not aware the author had passed away in 1998. Almost everything in this book was dated as you would expect, the basic agronomy is sound but technology has advanced far beyond when the book was written. The author promotes a ridge till and starter fertilizer system that has fallen by the wayside. He is skeptical of No till farming and seems to view it as more of a necessary evil. Times have changed and No till has been proven to work in almost any situation under proper management. I'm sure the author would have kept up with advances in farming and would have different views if he were alive today.
