Daniel Koretz's Measuring Up is an excellent place to start. The book is hard to classify. It is too sophisticated to be called a primer. There are no equations, so it can't be a measurement book. (Also, it is entertaining to read.) It says good things about testing and test use and takes apart some arguments of testing opponents, so it can't be an anti-testing book. But, it raises profound challenges to the interpretation of score trends on high-stakes tests, to the meaning of achievement trend and gap reports in terms of percent proficient, to the interpretation of crossnational achievement comparisons, and to popular assumptions about testing of students in special populations (including some assumptions written into law). So, it can't be a protesting book, either...He does a great service by clarifying measurement principles in the context of widespread testing uses and misuses.

A must for parents, teachers, politicians and anyone else who cares about schools

It is incredibly hard to figure out how good a school is, especially compared to other schools. For a long time, we have used test scores to judge schools -- and even students!! But what do those scores really mean? We all remember teachers who were easy graders or hard graders, or even inconsistent graders. It turns out that "standardized tests" are no more straightforward than the grades we all got in school. Measuring Up explains how and why. Because test scores are now used as to judge students, schools and even to compare schools, this might be the single most important topic in education, certainly for non-educators and perhaps for educators as well.

The brilliant thing about this book is how clear and easy to follow it is. Educational testing is a technical field, but the author explains it in terms that those outside the field can understand. Through generous use of examples and personal anecdotes, Daniel Koretz shows both how thing work and how they fail to work. Having read this, you will not only know the ways are supposed to be, but the reality of how things really are. Koretz shares stories from his own experiences the illustrate what is really going on.

Because testing is here to stay, this book will remain a gem for many years, but it is especially timely today. NCLB is up for reauthorization soon, and testing remains the most controversial part of the law. Most of the debates about the law are about testing, and it looks like the the most active voices in the debates -- be they politicians, parents or the press -- have rather little understanding of the underlying issues.

Measuring Up does not shy from the controversial or most difficult questions about testing. There's a chapter about testing and special education, a chapter about test bias and one about inflated test results. Do not think, however, the author is an opponent of standardized testing. Rather, he want them to be used properly and their results to be understood. He does not want students or schools to be rewarded or punished because tests are misused or are poorly designed in the first place.

If you are a parent trying to choose a school for your children or a neighborhood to live in, this book will make you a really smart consumer of test score information. If you are a teacher working in the NCLB paradigm, this book will help you to understand both the real strengths and the real weaknesses of this system. If you work in or care about education policy -- local school board member, policy analyst, department of education worker, elected official, member of a PTA or concerned member of the community -- this book will show you what you really need to understand to make informed decisions about testing and how your schools and/districts ought to respond to respond to test results.

A Fair and Balanced Presentation of the What Standardized Tests Can and Cannot Do

Professor Koretz teaches a course on standardized testing for non-statisticians at Harvard. This book is based on that course. There is no complicated math, but lots of clear explanations and easily understood examples. What I found most interesting was that much of the information about the limits of these tests came not from their critics, but from their developers. This should be required reading for all who work with the results of these tests. I only wish that more of Professor Koretz's examples had come from the California Standards Tests that I have to give each year.

Quantitative Statistics and Educational Measurement for the "Rest of Us"

This book covers all of the important material that I found covered in a Master's-Level course on Statistical Methods in Assessment, but is presented with great clarity and without the details of many of the numerical methods. I have long searched for a way to explain to those without a strong mathematical or statistical background just how complex the issues are when it comes to collecting, summarizing, and making decisions based on educational "data".

So far I have found both this book and Standardized Minds: The High Price of America's Testing Culture and What We Can Do to Change It to do a good job of this. This book is much stronger in its presentation of the statistical methods and their limitations, and it does not take sides. The latter book, which has a clear anti-testing bias, explains both the statistical difficulties and societal consequences of the way tests are currently used.

An excellent introductory approach to Biogeography

This book written by some of the best authors known in the field comprises a quite extensive overall view of biogeography, its fundaments, beginnings, divisions, schools and relatively new applications and inner relations with other sciences.It contains also a copy of the original zoogeographic regions map created by Wallace. This book resembles the whole biogeography curse taught in the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, UNAM. which is quite exceptional and has the best scientists-profesors in Latin America. If you are looking for a "has it all" biogeography book this one is a must have for undergraduates and graduates students interested in comparative biology, systematics and distributions of taxa within time and space. The review has only four stars for strictly brand new additions of up to date biogeographical information are not included in this edition, yet, but for a three year old book it is a minor problem.

Brilliant text--but not substantially different than the second edition

Biogeography, Third Edition, is a beautiful new edition of a classic, but one that I suspect was encouraged by the publisher to sell more books rather than make much needed corrections and updates to the text. I certainly hope that the binding on this edition holds up a bit better than the second edition.

Brown and Lomolino's Biogeography is THE authoritative introductory text in this field. I suppose if you can't lay your hands on a cheap used copy of the second edition, or want a pristine new copy for posterity, you can't go wrong by purchasing this book.

Biogeography was a very fine book. I would also suggest some of E. O. Wilsons writings as well. I would also recommend Song of
the Dodo. The book is understandable and accessable to the average reader.

The book arrived on time, and in fairly decent condition. However, this book doesn't teach what I have learned from the business company, N21. I think N21 has a better style and more appropriate to the times and to how people want to be treated.
But I'm glad I took a look for just a few bucks.

Essential book for those into the Persian/Indian clubs or physical culture in general. This book has quite a bit of information about the tools, exercises and most interestingly, the culture and history of Persian physical culture. I believe it all applies to all of the later systems as well. There are many videos and books starting to become available about this sort of discipline, but here you will find historically accurate exercises presented in the ways in which you will perform correctly in order to not hurt yourself. The images are also a good help to have an idea about posture. I believe it is useful to have an instructor, but this book will definitely help you to a good start. Happy clubbing!

Christina Georgina Rossetti was born in London on December 5, 1830. Along with being a young poet, Rossetti also became an Italian professor at King's College, University of London. Rossetti's intense devotion to religion showed in her various works, including ""Uphill,"" her most famous work. this Dover Thrift Edition of poems by Christina Rossetti is compact,
easy to carry about and to read, rewarding momentary opportunities.
The title poem is not a favorite of mine, but many do admire it.
I prefer four short poems here: Remember, After Death, Song, and Uphill.
¶ This is one of several rewarding Dover Thrift Editions;
if you have not yet tried them, this one will open a door.
