Enjoyable read

The second instalment in computer consultant, professional speaker, and keen yachtsman Michael Green’s ‘Blood Line’ trilogy.

Blood Bond continues the story of two branches of the Chatfield family (one based in England, the other in New Zealand) who appear to be the only survivors in the aftermath of a fatal global pandemic. It begins with some of the New Zealand branch having rescued several British family members from the repressive medieval-style regime established by Nigel, a tyrannical patriarch, at Haver Hall near Kent, England. The fleeing group sails back to the Southern Hemisphere, facing unexpected dangers and fracturing relationships at stopovers in South Africa and Australia as they search for supplies, and other survivors.

Meanwhile the family remaining in England battle to survive Nigel and his sons’ wrath at the escape, before planning a coup – but would a new ‘democratic’ regime be any better than Nigel’s dictatorial one, or would self-interest and retribution lead to political short-cuts, power-plays and eventual savagery?

Although it’s the second in a trilogy, Blood Bond is a thrilling and enjoyable read even for those that haven’t read Blood Line (the first in the series, published in 2008). I quickly picked up the ‘back-story’, and increasingly found the pages whirring as Green intercut between the events unfolding at Haver Hall, and those on the yacht Archangel.

One of the best things about the novel, apart from the exciting events, is the way in which Green raises questions, in amongst the twisting plotline, about how humans interact with each other, especially when under tremendous pressure. When everything is stripped away, what would we do when it comes to protecting our family? How interested in the good of the group would even the most community-minded amongst us, really be?

Green, who lives on his yacht Raconteur in Gulf Harbour, has written the series to help raise funds for LifeLine, the telephone counseling charity. Regardless of the great cause, it’s a book many thriller fans would enjoy, and should consider buying.

Thoroughly enjoyed this follow-up to the first book

Thoroughly enjoyed this follow-up to the first book. With 90% of the series I read, I do not have the inclination to continue, but I grabbed this one immediately and it didn't let me down. Well written and well edited and the story was interesting and the characters well developed. I'll keep this trilogy in my Kindle. I delete the majority of the books I read, knowing that I'll never visit them again, but I'll check in on the Chatfields again.

After surviving the SARS Pandemic a branch of the Chatfield Family escape a new brutal regime ruling Britain and escape to New Zealand. Michael Green has written an exciting sequel to his first novel Bloodline. Bloodbond like Bloodline is a page turner and Green takes his reader on an exciting journey and an equally gripping finale. Good stuff from a master storyteller.

About the Author
Anatoly Karpov is a living legend; he dominated the chess world for over a decade as the world chess champion between 1975 and 1985. Garry Kasparov dethroned him and the two ideologically opposed Russians have had a bitter rivalry ever since. He is considered the best positional player in the history of chess and is the author of several other books on chess theory.

Mostly Useless

I have always been a big fan of Karpov's books. I own all three of his games collections books (Olms 2008, Batsford 1996, even RHM 1978) and all four books in the Openings in Action series. To say that this book is not in the league of those other brilliant books does not go far enough. This book isn't just un-brilliant, it's downright bad. The analysis isn't just uninspired, but almost nonexistent. The comments are quite mundane and totally uninstructive. This is the type of drivel I expect from Schiller, not Karpov. This book will not teach you to find the right plan, or anything at all about chess really.

I assume that the problem is that Matsukevich rather than Karpov wrote it with Karpov only lending his name to the cover. I will be very suspicious before buying another Karpov book in the future.

A Fireside Chat With the Master

I see a lot of criticism in others' reviews concerning the sparsity of the analysis, but this seem to me totally off-base. If you had a chance to have one of the great talents in chess history sit down with you for an evening or two, guiding you through the principles that he felt were the most important laws of chess, culled from an ex-champion's lifetime of experience, would you jump at the chance? Let's say he did it by playing through a number of games, each of which at some point in the game illustrated the particular point he was trying to make to you. Would you spend time arguing about each game, arguing that if one of the players had played the opening better, that the point that the world champion was trying to make to you would not have even come up? Well, if you would have argued in this manner, you would have been like the commenters who complain about the lack of exhaustive analysis in this book. You would be so obsessed with whether each player had played the game perfectly that you would completely miss out on some great lessons offered in this book. I don't know which lessons come from Karpov and which from Matsukevich, who I understand has a lot of teaching experience, but if you just read through this book, playing the moves out on a chess board, you'll learn a lot. If you read it enough so you can play the games from memory (a feat made much easier by the absence of extensive analytical notes), you'll improve a lot.

Nice Book By Karpov, A

This book is correctly titled. Karpov suggests to have the reader analyse the position first using seven factors outlined in the book. Once it is determined whether the position is either good, bad or equal then he is to employ the right plan for such positions. He has specific recommendations for certain positions. He also gives out a lot of positional tips when executing the plans. The book is sparsely annotated. But the book's purpose was to show and find the most practical and promising plan. This book teaches a certain system or method of doing things. The system is practical and time saving. I like the way it is laid out. Not much far out annotations you don't need. But if you want to create your plans after so much time calculating variations after variations then go for it. But I suspect, if strong masters even do that. I believe what separates a strong master from an amateur is that masters are able to judge right away using such established systems whether to calculate or not. And every master has his own system of handling such positions. Karpov is just showing the reader how his system works. His approach is very practical and realistic enough for average players to execute.
If you want a well analysed book, then get one of those journals filled with computer analysis. Such books dominate every book shelves of any book store selling chess books. Those books will recommend you moves only after consulting an ungodly amount computer analysis. One coach told me such books can actually ruin an improving chess player. He rather lean to such books with human annotations for his students to study.

Still the Best of Taleb

Fooled by Randomness revolutionized how I view the world. In multiple ways. It's hard to overstate how rarely a book changes your ideas about how the world works once, let alone multiple times, and that Taleb has managed to weave a fantastically engaging and entertaining book out of what could very easily be a dry and technical topic is just icing in the cake.

I've read all four of Taleb's books and Fooled By Randomness still stands out as my favorite. Although Black Swan is still the most popular, and most controversial, Fooled in many ways is the most practical, as it's the most general and therefore most widely applicable. Everyone should deeply understand the survivorship and hindsight biases, as well as the difference between conditional and unconditional probability.

That being said, it's often hard to determine whether the heart of the book is the ideas (which to someone such as myself who has only a Stats 101 background in probability are almost always revelation-inducing) or the author. I can't stress how much I learned from this book that has nothing to do with probability or statistics, just random asides from an erudite and meandering mind. Regardless of your background (or even your interest in probability) you will probable learn some fascinating and/or useful tidbit from Fooled, and probably a whole lot more.

Will change your perspective on the role of luck in your success

Fooled by randomness is a book that will change your perspective about life success and chance, if you are in a profession where making predictions on highly uncertain fields is your daily bread, this book will help you realize that sometimes success is mostly a product of luck, not to say that all people involved on economics, stock markets, big CEOs, sales people, etc. are purely successful by luck, but sometimes they (and I include myself) give greater credit for ability and knowledge more than luck, this situation expose you to a great danger: a big failure event (or the black swan as described by Nassim)
Is far better to be aware of this problem with randomness and take all possible precautions to avoid a big catastrophe (this really is what counts in terms of managing a good streak of good chance). With basic and logical examples Taleb explains really good (or at least makes you think about it) how the human brain tries to match great events due to expertise and not luck (but always on hindsight) and bad luck to randomness. If you have some profession where success is not as straight forward related as a dentist maybe (his favorite example on the book) or something not as deterministic but instead more economic or social statistical involved role, reading Fooled by Randomness will change your perspective and help you to be prepared for the black swan event

Less generalizable than Black Swan but still helpful for understanding scope, scale, and context of information

Useful and insightful perspectives from Taleb on the subject he is famous for, but as a book it is more scattered than "Black Swan." The general theme of the book is randomness, but he jumps from topic to topic, e.g. options trading to historical narrative to behavior psychology to journalism, back to trading, back to journalism, etc.

Although the book does try to be relevant to non-financial market professions and decisions, it feels to me much less generalizable than "Black Swan." He even uses a term like "randomness professions" or something (I can't remember) to distinguish those that are from those that aren't, but gives few examples outside of financial markets, and I suspect most non-traders will feel like the book isn't quite written for them. (I think a lot of people like the book just because he dumps on financial professionals, and there is recent popular sentiment that those guys aren't as smart as they think they are and deserve to be taken down a peg or two.)

Anyway, as a non-trader I found Taleb's ideas in this book broadened the way I think about how information comes to me, what it represents, what is missing from it, and how I make decisions based on it.
