“Life proves as haunting as death in this well-crafted ghost story.”—Kirkus Reviews
Helen needed a body to be with her beloved. Jenny had to escape from hers before her spirit was broken. It was wicked, borrowing it, but love drives even the gentlest soul to desperate acts.
And Helen, who has returned to help Jenny, finds herself trapped, haunting the girl she wished to save. Jenny and Billy's love storybegins out-of-body and continues into the tumultuous realm of the living, where they are torn apart just as they begin to remember falling in love.

From Booklist
Whitcomb returns to the ghostly world she so cleverly created in A Certain Slant of Light (2005). This time, 130-year-old spirit Helen has occasion to inhabit Jenny, a contemporary teen whose fundamentalist Christian parents go past the limit of acting abusively in their efforts to curtail their daughter’s social life. Meanwhile, Helen’s old love, James, possesses the body of Jenny’s ne’er-do-well classmate, Billy. Although choppier in phrasing and world building than the original story, this new title expands a compelling concept while introducing readers to characters who must stretch to make the best of circumstances that they did not necessarily create. A worthy follow up to A Certain Slant of Light
By Liviania
A CERTAIN SLANT OF LIGHT has a special place in my heart, because when I went to college it was the first book my roommate lent to me. How could we not be great roommates when she started our relationship with an offbeat ghost romance?
Now, years later, Laura Whitcomb has written a sequel. UNDER THE LIGHT is a terrific follow up. Jenny and Billy are back in their bodies and very confused. It's been months since the day they remember, but to everyone else they've been there the whole time acting out of character. Oh yeah, and Billy has a picture of them in bed together. As they begin to piece together what happened to them, they also begin to fall in love.
UNDER THE LIGHT is a slow book to develop, but oh so lovely. I feel like Helen's story really ended in A CERTAIN SLANT OF LIGHT and that her parts were a bit extraneous, although I can understand her feeling guilt about what she did to Jenny. At the same time, I enjoyed spending more time with such a wonderful character. I highly recommend this duology for anyone looking for paranormal romances that don't follow the usual mold.

Not as good as the first
By Maya
I loved A Certain Slant of Light. Thus, I couldn't wait to begin "Under the Light," its sequel. Unfortunately, the second book just didn't live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, Ms. Whitcomb is an extremely gifted writer. Her writing style is so poetic, it's hard to believe her novels were written in this century and not in centuries past. However, I just couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to immerse myself in the plotlines presented in this novel. The two spirits in the field/shooting star scene was so cheesy that I found myself rolling my eyes as I read it. I would not have expected such a scene to be included in this book, since its predecessor, though YA like "Under the Light", had scenes in it that were clearly intended for a much more mature reader. Therefore, while I highly recommend A Certain Slant of Light, I cannot say the same for its sequel.

Beautiful Writing / Dismal Story
By OutlawPoet
When I selected this book, I had no idea that this was the second in a series. I have not read the first book and, unfortunately, have no intention of doing so.
Let me start by saying that the quality of the writing is fantastic. It's very lyric and the author uses words to paint her story with a certain dreamlike quality.
Unfortunately for me, I was lost when it came to the characters - I loathed most of the characters in this book. One of the main characters, Helen, was particularly awful. I acknowledge that I might not feel like this had I experienced her in the first book, but I found her cruel and careless. As for the story itself, it's really quite sad - full of lonely, unhappy, tragic people.
Although I appreciated the author's overall skill, unfortunately, this was not the book for me. 3 stars.
