Revenge of a Not-So-Pretty Girl, by Carolita Blythe

Fans of Walter Dean Myers and Rita Williams-Garcia's One Crazy Summer will cherish this gripping story of an African American girl living in 1980s Brooklyn, who overcomes abuse and neglect in discovering real friendship, self-respect, and that pretty and mean don't always win.

Girls who are pretty have a way of looking down their perfect noses at anyone they feel isn’t worthy of sharing the air with them. They have a way of making regular girls like me feel inferior for not winning the gene pool lottery. Tormenting them is my way of getting even.
Everyone knows that pretty equals mean, and Evelyn Ryder used to be a beautiful movie star—never mind that it was practically a lifetime ago. There’s no time limit on mean. So if you think I feel guilty about mugging her, think again.
But for something that should have been so simple, it sure went horribly wrong.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7-10-Faye, 14, feels worthless and oppressed. Her father, a struggling musician, left her and her mother years earlier, her mother is full of anger and takes it out on the teen, and her two neighborhood friends have convinced her that if you aren't attractive, the only way to make it in life is to take what you want. The novel, which is set in 1984 Brooklyn, opens with Faye and her friends staking out a former movie star's apartment so they can take her money. The robbery goes awry and the elderly lady ends up sprawled across the floor. Faye finds herself returning to the scene of the crime a few days later. What ensues is a journey to find herself. Faye befriends the old woman and begins to question her life choices. Faye's mother is realistically flawed, as are all of the adults in the novel, and Blythe offers no easy solutions for turning one's life around. The tough-talking Faye slips up and her road to maturity isn't smooth. This realistic portrayal of emotions, decisions, and hardships will appeal to teens who are also struggling with their identities.-Tammy Turner, Centennial High School, Frisco, TXα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
If beauty is on the inside, Faye certainly doesn’t have much going for her at the start of this book, set in Brooklyn in the mid-1980s. She and her friends rob an elderly woman who they believe was once a movie star. During the robbery, Faye accidentally injures Evelyn quite severely. Haunted by guilt, and desperate to find a way to escape her mother’s abusive home as much as she can, Faye returns to the apartment to check on Evelyn, and the two develop the most unlikely of friendships. This is a classic coming-of-age story wherein Faye must face her own burden of responsibility and break free from the detrimental expectations of others. Peppered with ’80s pop-culture references, but otherwise untethered to the era, the book sometimes feels dated instead of retro. But Faye’s personal growth and her eventual escape from a dark home life are rewarding, as is the quirky friendship between Faye and Evelyn, from which Faye learns much about responsibility and individuality. Grades 6-9. --Heather Booth

Every detail, physical and emotional, is true-to-life
By Teen Reads
Faye is on the lookout for the woman she and her friends plan to rob. Their ring-leader, bossy Caroline, planned the heist after she learned there was a retired movie actress living in this Brooklyn apartment. A famous actress should have tons of cash, and the other girls are very excited. Faye's feeling reluctant. It's a bit different when they've stolen from mean, privileged teens, who flaunt their good looks and possessions in Faye's face. Gillian, the third person of their team, spots the actress on her way, but says, "...I gotta tell you, though, she doesn't look like a movie star to me."

When Faye spots their intended victim trudging up the stairs to the vestibule, she sees what Gillian means. This is a tiny, ancient lady with a hump on her back and white cotton-candy hair. She isn't dressed well and doesn't look like she belongs in this swanky apartment building, which happens to be not far from Faye's home but is an entire world apart in terms of classiness. This woman looks like she would fit in the shabby apartment Faye shares with her mother. From the old lady's appearance, she could even be homeless. Now Caroline insists on carrying the woman's bag of groceries into her apartment. When Faye and Gillian enter, their victim is propped against the wall with the groceries strewn over the floor. She insists she only has the few dollars that were in her purse, but the girls search her apartment. Caroline, frustrated, goes berserk, throwing crockery against the floor. After the old lady hands over bills hidden in a cookbook, Faye idly picks up a framed photograph. The woman lunges at Faye, who pulls back, accidentally knocking her down. The elderly lady hits her head on the edge of the table and slides to the floor.

As Faye walks to her home, she feels as if she is in a nightmare. The scene in which the little old lady strikes her head and crumples lifelessly to the floor replays in her mind repeatedly. Even at home, as she rushes to accomplish chores her mother expects done, she can feel her heart pound. As usual, Mama is anything but a comfort and Faye could never confide in her. Mama is forever the opposite of affectionate, now yanking Faye along to church where Faye wonders if she will flare into flames, murderer that she is.

Faye's absent father pays for her to attend a Catholic high school. In her religious studies class the next day, her nemesis, Sister Margaret Theresa Patricia Bernadette (who insists on being addressed with every one of her names) writes the word "KARMA" on the blackboard in foot-high letters. Keisha, Faye's best friend, jokes around, mouthing "karma" and widening her eyes as if she is a star in a horror flick. However, the concept of karma suddenly has a terrible personal meaning for Faye --- and as the nun discusses how actions can lead to rude awakenings, Faye's world closes in on her. By the time she's out of school, she feels as if she is actually going insane. She is impelled to the old lady's apartment, where she stands with her hand on the door knob. If the knob turns, she'll know the old lady died and that Faye is a true murderer, but Faye could never predict the twists and turns her life will soon take.

I was hooked from page one of this layered, nuanced page-turner, which weaves themes of conscience, family connections, friendship and more into a stunning coming of age story. Author Carolita Blythe never missteps as we enter Faye's life. Every detail, physical and emotional, is true-to-life. Faye is not only a totally real and sympathetic person, she is also both witty and refreshingly complex, making REVENGE OF A NOT-SO-PRETTY GIRL a story that lingers long after the tale is finished.

This is an amazing book. I thought I'd be reading it for a week or so, taking time to read a chapter or two at night, but I rarely put it down and finished it in a weekend. Carolita Blythe knows how to tell an emotional, page turning story. This inspirational book is full of heart and soul. I can't recommend it enough.

Beautifully written tear jerker about love and redemption and a sad little girl and a lonely woman who become unlikely friends. This book is touching in many ways and does a great job of describing the loneliness and sadness of both a teenager and an elderly woman.

Face It, by Vivian Diller Ph.d, Jill Muir-Sukenick Ph.D.

Let’s face it: everyone’s getting older. But millions of women, raised to believe that success and happiness are based on their intelligence and accomplishments, face an unexpected challenge: the physical realities of aging. If looks are not supposed to matter, why do so many women panic as their appearance changes? Their dilemma stems from two opposing societal views of beauty which lead to two different approaches to aging. Should women simply grow old naturally since their looks don’t define them, or should they fight the signs of aging since beauty and youth are their currency and power? This Beauty Paradox leaves many women feeling stuck. Face It, by Vivian Diller, Ph.D., is a psychological guide to help women deal with the emotions brought on by their changing appearances. As a model turned psychotherapist, Diller has had the opportunity to examine the world of beauty from two very different vantage points. This unique perspective helped her develop a six-step program that begins with recognizing “uh-oh” moments that reveal the reality of changing looks, and goes on to identify the masks used to cover deeper issues and define the role beauty plays in a woman’s life, and ends with bidding adieu to old definitions of beauty, so women can enjoy their appearance—at any age!

Adds to Anxiety
By Jeani Rector
I don't know why the other reviewers seem to like this book so much, perhaps they are friends of the authors. But I don't know the authors from Adam, and I am a woman who is heading down the aging path, so here is my take on the book.

FACE IT seems to be entirely made up of asking various women the same questions: "When did you first realize you were getting old? When was that 'uh-oh' moment when you realized you are losing your looks?"

Over and over again. We get it. There are women who are afraid of losing their looks. Lots of them, according to this book.

But where are the chapters about what to do about it emotionally, how to cope, and were are instructions to feel good about ourselves? Only the last few pages are given to that, and even that seems to be just a brief over-view.

In the meantime, we hear about a women whose husband constantly cheats on her with younger women. That is supposed to help us? She leaves him only to realize that being a 50-year-old single parent is hard and depressing. We needed to know this from a book?

Then how about the woman who is so afraid that younger women will take her job that she cannot sleep at night. Well guess what: this is a 25-year-old! Sure, she is a model, but what message does it tell us when 25-year-olds are worried about aging? Again, we needed to know this?

Why can't we read about strong women who change their lives for the better when they retire, such as those who take up oil painting, creative writing, or volunteer to feed the homeless? Why doesn't this book encourage women to pursue the things they are passionate about? Where is the meaning? No, this book focuses on the superficial; it seems to encourage women to study themselves in the mirror.

I see no benefits from this book for older women, just continuous messages to increase the aging anxiety. FACE IT repeatedly stresses how this is a society that values youth, that only sees youth as beautiful. Written by two former models, this book concentrates on looks. No matter what it promises, it seems to give the message that when you lose your looks, you are doomed in our society. Husbands will cheat with younger women.

Therefore, I feel the title and the cover is misleading. Sure, it does ask women what they feel about losing their looks (and the authors seem to find insecure women who are depressed about it) but the second part of the title: 'what to do about it', is pretty much non-existant. The entire book seems to be filled with women talking about how awful they feel about getting old.

If you want such a negative and anxiety-provoking book, go for it. Me, I am going to throw it away. I would never give it away, because I would not wish this awful book on any of my women friends. I care about my friends too much for that.

Aging = dead woman walking? Not after reading this book!
By Peggy Halsegan
This slim little volume is a deep book. The authors explain how women today have many years left to live, but are afraid to go there. We all have the day where we realize the world no longer sees us as we see ourselves, and little bit of us kind of dies inside. We can't look to our mothers as role models, they weren't forced to pretend they were eternally 20 to remain in the game. As the authors point out, we can't pretend to be eternally 20 either. We owe it to ourselves and our daughters to model a better way of growing older. Letting go of our youthful image, say the authors, "does not mean denying youth or repressing youthful memories. [As in adolescence] it means saying goodbye [to your young version of yourself] to make room for what comes next."

We all know our culture links youth with beauty; the authors tell us not to punish ourselves for trying to live up to such an unreasonable standard. We can't get any younger, it's just not gonna happen. So how do we face the fear--the real fear here--of becoming unloved, unlovable, marginalized, dead-to-the-world, still-walking-around female human beings? These galz give us a road map. I can't do it justice in this short review, but I think their case studies and practical suggestions are gold.

When young women can't imagine what they'll do with their lives after they turn 50, then we need to show them. It's the least we can do for them, and ourselves.

Solid steps for any type of change in life
By N. Taylor
I really loved this book. It is not a book about about staying beautiful nor is it a book full of trite pop psychology mantra about how beauty is within. The truth is that we do possess inner beauty but in this culture, our outer beauty is still important.

The authors have an incredible insight on the psychological effects of women aging. As a former beautiful co-ed turned middle age suburban housewife/professional counselor/mother, I couldn't agree more with the authors take on beauty and the aging woman. We go through an "Uh-oh" moment and thus begins our journey. For me it was when the cute guy flirted shamelessly and I realized his target was my little girl. Little meaning 14 years old and 5'7".

The authors' approach to the aging process is to resolve the beauty paradox. Through specific steps and anecdotal evidence based on their combined years of private practice, the authors guide the reader through the process. Frankly, the steps could be used for any life altering event.

Step 1. Turn Uh-Oh moments into Ah-ha moments.
Step 2. The only mask you wear should be made of honey and yogurt. Essentially, aging is not a dirty word. Come out of hiding and accept the outer self you are becoming
Step 3. Talk back to your internal dialogues. What is the message you are hearing in your head? Reframe it.
Step 4. Give Mom her due. Take the best of her and leave the rest behind. Her aging process is not the same as your own. The cultural experiences are different. It's not your mother's fault. Or your father's. Or your own. Again, reframe the experience.
Step 5. Use adolescent memories instead of repeating them. Remember how awkward we felt growing into our bodies and fashions? Avoid the impulsive decisions we made back then.
Step 6. Saying Goodbye is hard to do. But saying goodbye to something is the first step to saying hello to another.

The authors provide excellent and personal insight into the journey of the aging woman. The aging woman can be anybody from 23 to 93. The authors are really guiding the reader in accepting any kind of change that is difficult.

Highly recommend this book to anybody - but especially the woman of any age going through tumult due to aging, infidelity of either partner, illness, etc.

Finally, in Networks and Organizations: Structure, Form, and Action, an edited volume of original articles, he explores the emergence of network-like organizations. He is also the author of over 75 journal articles, book chapters, cases, working papers, and notes.

Professor Nohria has served as an advisor and consultant to several large and small companies in different parts of the world. He has been interviewed by ABC, CNN, and NPR, and cited in Business Week, Economist, Financial Times, Fortune, New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Prior to joining the Harvard Business School faculty in July 1988, Professor Nohria received his Ph.D. in Management from the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (which honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2007).

Dr. Khurana is the Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development at the Harvard Business School. He teaches a doctoral seminar on Management and Markets and The Board of Directors and Corporate Governance in the MBA program.

Professor Khurana received his B.S. from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and his A.M. (Sociology) and Ph.D. in Organization Behavior from Harvard University. Prior to attending graduate school, he worked as a founding member of Cambridge Technology Partners in Sales and Marketing.

Professor Khurana's research uses a sociological perspective to focus on the processes by which elites and leaders are selected and developed. He has written extensively about the CEO labor market with a particular interest on: the factors that lead to vacancies in the CEO position; the factors that affect the choice of successor; the role of market intermediaries such as executive search firms in CEO search; and the consequences of CEO succession and selection decisions for subsequent firm performance and strategic choices. He has published articles on Corp. Governance in the Harvard Business and Sloan Management Review. His book on the CEO labor market, Searching for a Corporate Savior: The Irrational Quest for Charismatic CEOs (Princeton University Press) was published in October, 2002. The book is an analysis of the labor market for CEOs. Khurana's current research grows out of the same interests in the social context of business leadership and the allocation of leadership positions that motivated his research on the CEO labor market.

His most recent book, From Higher Aims to Hired Hands: The Social Transformation of American Business Schools and the Unfulfilled Promise of Management as a Profession (2007: Princeton University Press), chronicles the evolution of management as a profession, with particular focus on the institutional development of the MBA. This research is rooted in the question of how certain occupations within business (not just executive management but also consulting, private equity, and investment banking) have come to require the MBA credential as a prerequisite for entry. The significance of this issue lies in its direct bearing on the question of how professional management has claimed and received legitimation for its role as the steward of a very substantial proportion of society’s material wealth and resources―a role that has itself been subject to changing interpretations over the decades since the phenomenon of professional management first appeared on the American scene.

From Higher Aims to Hired Hands received the American Sociological Association's Max Weber Book Award in 2008 for most outstanding contribution to scholarship in the past two years. In 2007, the book was also the Winner of the 2007 Best Professional/Scholarly Publishing Book in Business, Finance and Management, Association of American Publishers.

Khurana's work on the deficiencies of the CEO labor market and his research on business education is regularly featured by the general media such as: Business Week, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post, CNBC, The Economist, Globe and Mail, The New Yorker, Chief Executive and Corporate Board Member magazine. He has also published opinion-editorials in some of these outlets. He has consulted to corporations and executive search firms to help improve their CEO succession, governance, and executive development practices. He has been recognized by the London Times as one of 'The Thinkers 50', a list of the fifty most influential management thinkers in the world.

Check Publisher Price first
By S. Price
I've been teaching a graduate leadership class for three semesters, and still struggle to figure out how to give students a constructive growth experience. When I saw this book, and the range of topics covered, I was eager to read it. However, the price is exorbitant. On a lark, I went to the publisher site, where the book is on sale for $84, no shipping charge, cheaper by $30 than the cheapest price I could find at any online purveyor. I haven't read this yet, but I'm feeling good about the bargain!

Cahokia: Ancient America's Great City on the Mississippi (Penguin Library of American Indian History), by Timothy R. Pauketat

The fascinating story of a lost city and an unprecedented American civilization

While Mayan and Aztec civilizations are widely known and documented, relatively few people are familiar with the largest prehistoric Native American city north of Mexico-a site that expert Timothy Pauketat brings vividly to life in this groundbreaking book. Almost a thousand years ago, a city flourished along the Mississippi River near what is now St. Louis. Built around a sprawling central plaza and known as Cahokia, the site has drawn the attention of generations of archaeologists, whose work produced evidence of complex celestial timepieces, feasts big enough to feed thousands, and disturbing signs of human sacrifice. Drawing on these fascinating finds, Cahokia presents a lively and astonishing narrative of prehistoric America.

Mounds of mystery
By Jay C. Smith
Cahokia: Ancient America's Great City on the Mississippi (Penguin's Library of American Indian History)
I am a lay reader and know very little of archeology, but I have a special affinity for Cahokia. In 1967 my friend and I camped at what was then Cahokia Mounds State Park and were able to observe close-up a dig then in progress, with helpful explanations provided by the lone archeologist on-site. It seemed so painstaking, performed with fine instruments and brushes and, in so far as we could see at the time, it uncovered only shards and fragments.

Back then archeologists still had not grasped much of the significance of the site as it is now understood. At one time they believed it to be a ritual center, occupied only briefly by a few inhabitants. It is now known to have been a major eleventh- and twelfth-century populous urban center supported by surrounding farms, an early example of a government-sponsored urban renewal, a culture that marked a radical transformation in the history of indigenous Americans.

Well-told non-fiction accounts of archeological enterprises can draw in readers much like a good mystery, and Timothy Pauketat displays something of a novelist's touch here (although do not expect "Indiana Jones"). He recounts dozens of discoveries, generally in sufficient detail for readers to evaluate for themselves the evidence the archeologists were accumulating. Pauketat, himself a noted archeologist of the Cahokia site, clearly admires many of his predecessors and he gives us enough information about several to add an appealing human element to the narrative.

What most fascinates me is the breadth and detail of what archeologists are able to infer from what they find. Consider some of the more remarkable findings from Cahokia, the skeletal remains of females buried in groups in mounds and showing signs of violence (one such sign being clenched hands and feet, indicating spasms at the time of death). Many of these women seem to have been from someplace else, not Cahokia, based on their dental morphology and bone characteristics. Via isotope studies bioarchelogists can tell something about the women's diet (generally different than that of Cahokians), and they even venture judgments about the women's beauty based on their bone characteristics. These findings form one large piece of a body of evidence that enables the archeologists to conclude that notable features of Cahokian society included human sacrifice, political theater, and social inequality.

Sometimes the inferences can go too far, beyond the evidence. It seems to me, for example, that Pauketat is not on very solid ground in some of his speculations about the purposes or effects of the ritual sacrifices (although he is careful to present them only as possibilities, not certainties).

Of course not all of the mysteries of Cahokia are solved, including such major ones as where the people came from, why they disbanded (around the end of the twelfth century), and where they went. Pauketat says that most archeologists believe the Mississipian phenomenon, including Cahokia, was home-grown independent of Mesoamerican culture, but he seems to leave open the possibility of connections.

I was left wondering, for example, whether advances in skeletal DNA technology might help answer some of the remaining questions about the origins and destiny of the Cahokian people. The story is likely to have further chapters.

Brilliant introduction and narrative to the evolving and fascinating story ...
By B. Isenberg
Brilliant introduction and narrative to the evolving and fascinating story that is Cahokia. I particularly enjoyed the chapter in which Mr. Pauketat took the reader for a walk through Cahokia. This is a historical narrative at its best and I found it hard to put down. Pauketat is not only a phenomenal and respected expert archaeologist, but he is a very talented writer as well.

A required read for any Indigenous thinker.
By Amazon Customer
Pauketat has embraced and accepted the oral tradition of Native People's and forever transformed anthropology forever, for the better. From this important work, one can see the imprint of history onto the modern Indigenous.

The legacy of Meso-America is evident in the North American institutions of the Ancient Earthen Works and the long buried cosmology of First Man, Mother Corn, the Thunder Twins, and the Upper and Lower Realms.
